Namık Kemal University Health Practice and Research Hospital
I am Professor Nejat Altıntaş, Chief Physician at Namık Kemal University Hospital. I am a chest diseases and sleep diseases specialist. Why did I become a doctor? I want to share this with you today. At your age, of course, I was most enthusiastic about the white coat. I studied heartily and came to medical school to put on a white coat. The medical school requires a long 6-year education. I also studied medical school in English, so I studied at the medical school for 7 years, with the preparatory year. When we first entered the medical school, we thought we were professors, but while we were finishing it, we had a hard time and we were glad that we could finish as a doctor. Of course we had a hard time. It's a difficult faculty; difficult to finish, difficult to read; its books are difficult, but I would like to share this: A patient dies during my assistantship. They say that the patient is dead, let's leave the patient. I came and saw the patient. I said, this patient is a young patient, I'm going to resuscitate this patient a little more, I'm going to deal with it. We dealt with the patient, eventually the patient was resurrected and stood up. The next day, he went to the canteen where he was drinking his tea and coffee. He didn't even know about me. He didn't even know about the resuscitation I had done for him, but when I saw that patient, I was proud of myself. I said that I am glad I chose this profession, I am fortunate that I had the honor of wearing a white coat. In this century, you know that money and materiality have gone beyond everything, but people are happy not as they spend or buy, but as they give. The more we give, the happier we are. When we look at the world, the world is now a mechanical, robotic world. People are unhappy; We see unhappy people inside shopping malls. Why is that? Because it is always reception oriented. Yet what is medicine? It is focused on giving. You give people something of yourself, add from your soul, give your positive energy, you give your humanity. Therefore, there will be nothing in return. What happens also adds humanity to you. Your soul is nourished. So it doesn't take anything from you; but it brings something to you. Whichever profession you choose, you must want to be morally satisfied. When you choose the medical faculty, you have a profession as soon as you finish. Currently there is no problem in terms of employment. Why should we choose Namık Kemal University Hospital? Primarily due to its location. This is Tekirdağ. According to the researches, Tekirdağ is the 4th best livable city in Turkey. It is both far and close to Istanbul, which is a very big city. Both far and close. They cannot come here , but when you want to get up and go, you can go there in 1 hour. The second is that it is by the sea. Beautiful, decent, extremely respectful and peaceful people. In general, we have people, especially Thracian people, who were once immigrants. These are also very peaceful people. Therefore, this place is very good for living. When we look at our hospital, I am now claiming that it is the best state university hospital in Turkey. Because this hospital is equipped with the newest and best equipment. With modern medicine, equipments began to change and the need for new equipments emerged. When we look at the equipment in our hospital, for instance, operations that cannot be done in many hospitals can be done in our hospital. You can find the latest technology devices here. I myself am a pulmonologist. We do valve therapy in COPD disease. We are one of the rare centers that perform this valve treatment in Turkey. Our students will have the chance to learn about them when they come here. The most important feature of our university, especially our hospital, is that our professors take care of the students personally. In the hospital, they stand by the students. In other words, it is not in an environment where the student is alone, as it may be in other places. The student thrives in education with the professor. Therefore, when you receive the education from the professor personally and you think that this training is based on the master-apprentice relationship, you will have a good education. That's why I recommend this to our young students: Definitely choose medical school, you will not regret it. If I come to life again, I will definitely become a doctor and I will wear that white coat again. I would also be honored to wear a white coat. When they choose our hospital, our university as a hospital, they will never regret it. They will have a university in which they will be very happy. I wish you all the best.
