Preparatory Education
Hello, I am Doctor Harun Göçerler, Director of The School of Foreign Languages at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University. We accept students from Çorlu Faculty of Engineering departments, Faculty of Arts and Sciences departments, Faculty of Medicine and Vocational School of Technical Sciences and Vocational School of Social Sciences. Our students study English in optional preparatory classes. At the same time, students of the French, English and German departments, which are compulsory preparatory classes of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, will start to study in our school starting from the 2021-2022 academic year. Two types of preparatory training are given in the school of foreign languages: the first is compulsory preparatory class training, and the second is optional foreign language preparatory training. In both cases, our students are trained over 24 hours per week. In total, we teach 3 languages: English, German and French. Our students receive intensive foreign language education for a total of 32 weeks, in the form of two semesters. Students are responsible for short-term exams, performance practices, portfolio studies and visa exams during these semesters. With average of the grades they receive from these exams and applications, a year-end grade is provided. Students who achieve 65 points or more from the year-end grade can continue their education in their departments. Concerning the optional preparatory classes, students in optional preparatory classes can switch to their departments and continue their education even if they fail the final exam, but they can get preparatory training again if they wish. Compulsory preparatory class students also repeat their preparatory training a second time if they fail the final exam. Unfortunately, students who are educated in compulsory preparatory classes that fail for two years in a row cannot move to their departments because they have to succeed there first. We grant these students different exemption exams rights and they can continue their education in vocational schools for two years. Let me talk about the quality of language education, our students are our biggest helpers and supporters in this regard. When our students participate enroll in their departments after preparatory education, they take advantage of student mobility to receive education such through Erasmus, and continue some of their education abroad or at least see new places When they return, they tell us that they didn’t have any communication problems, both in surveys and oral evaluations. What is important for us is to enable them to use foreign language effectively in their daily lives and academic lives. I would like to happily say that we have not received a negative feedback from our students about their experiences concerning speaking in real life scenarios. Before students make their university choices, my advice to them is to have detailed information about the city where they will probably live for 2 or 4 years. In this sense, what I will say is that Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University is located in one of the cities considered to be student friendly according to a student satisfaction survey conducted throughout Turkey. Tekirdag and Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University offer many opportunities to students both economically, socially and culturally. Especially because we are close to a metropolitan city like Istanbul, they can also participate in activities there and take cultural trips and academic trips. Due to the density of students in the city, students can also find the opportunity to develop themselves in many ways by participating in the activities of student clubs, in the activities organized within the municipality and in student venues located off campus. I would like to finish off with the slogan of our university: Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Makes You Feel the Difference. Choose our university, and feel the difference.
