Taekwondo Team
Hello, my name is Ayşenur Güleşçi, I am a 2nd Class Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department student. Today, I’ll provide you with information and tell you the purpose of Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a close defense sport done with bare hands and feet. IThe tradition goes back about 600 years in Korea. It is quite a popular style in Turkey. There is a special bond between athletes and coaches, sometimes even more powerful than parental ones. We have belts in Taekwondo. We have 5. These are white, yellow, green, blue and black belts, with intermediate ones in between. Collecting these can take 3 to 4 years, so it’s a long-term thing. Children start at a young age, from 7 to 8 years old, and start doing it thanks to their families. There are competitions and something we call “poomsae”. There are three separate types of taekwondo, but in Turley two are practiced. The competitions categories are separated according to weight, age of children, competitiveness and other criteria. In Poomse, they can start with 8 different moves and go up to 20.. We do these moves, take the belts and move on to the next level. Taekwondo is a sport that all age groups can be interested in. Our sports team was established in February between 2021 and 2022 academic year. The team was founded through my initiative and support of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. We currently have 70 members in our team. The majority of 70 members are students who are beginners but are interested. Few of the members, such as me, are more experienced in the sport. We do not do any training on the campus right now because our sports sciences department has not been fully opened yet, so we make use of the gyms that our school and the Ministry of Youth and Sports provides.
Because taekwondo is an individual sport, we have 4 athletes. Two of them are students who have participated in the nationals. The other has done it for a long time. We train 3 days a week, in the halls provided by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to us on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, we do training for 2 hours a week. Other than that, we go to matches. Last year we participated in the inter university tournament, we went to Hatay for 4 days to participate in the competition. Since our university is a new one, we do not have any league. I do not have any medals or trophies because I started doing taekwondo quite late, like in high school, but the true award in itself has been the discipline I was able to achieve. We do not have any criteria for this team, all students who are interested can join. Taekwondo is a sport that teaches you to develop your self-discipline, and also respect, Apart from that, thanks to Taekwondo, I have opened a club in the university, and enriched my social circle. Apart from that, I did the sport I wanted, so it was a plus for me. I wish success to the students who will take the university exam.
