I'm Prof. Dr. Mehmet Tektas. I was born in 1966 in Eskişehir. After graduating from Eskişehir Faculty of Science, Department of Mathematics, I started as a research assistant at Marmara University in 1989. After completing my master's and a doctorate in Applied Mathematics, I got my associate professorship there. I came to Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University in 2016. We opened the Department of Transportation here and the staff was formed for the department. I am currently the head of the department. Transportation Engineering is a department that has not been able to find its place because it is perceived as a sub-field of Civil Engineering in Turkey. When we look at the applications of Transportation Engineering in the world today, it is an engineering field that includes smart transportation systems and the basic elements of civil engineering and trains personnel working in local governments, including municipalities, the Ministry of Transportation and all related NGOs.When we look at the examples of Transportation Engineering in Turkey, we can say that it is a bit insufficient. Because it is considered an area that trains personnel to work only in the municipalities. But in reality, it is an engineering field that trains staff with multidisciplinary working skills. Our Transportation Engineering Department was opened academically with the permission of YÖK (Council of Higher Education). Our academic infrastructure, superstructure staff and laboratory facilities are all ready, but due to the occupancy in YÖK, our department is not open for education yet. We have made the necessary applications in this regard. We look forward to the official opening of our department and to provide education to students with an up-to-date curriculum and wide technological opportunities. To give an example, one of the most important issues of the digital age is smart transportation systems, which is the product of a multidisciplinary study. We have already updated and prepared a large part of Transportation Engineering in the context of intelligent transportation systems. From autonomous vehicles to traffic control systems, we have a qualified academic staff and experience that will train students not only in the fields of transportation, and transportation planning, but also in other fields such as informatics and electronic communication systems, in a multidisciplinary manner. When we opened Transportation Engineering here, we thought: I want to make a very assertive and clear speech for future friends. The physical environment we are in is the intelligent transportation systems laboratory. At the same time, we have BAUSMER, the only intelligent transportation systems application centre in Turkey. Apart from that, we have many international events. There is also an official scholarship for graduate and doctorate students, which we call YLS. We have 5 assistants. 3 of them completed their doctorate, and 2 of them are finishing their doctorate within 6 months. There are 3 of us, and we have a department with all academic infrastructure and superstructure, consisting of a total of 15 people. We are the only Transportation Engineering Department in Turkey that has this infrastructure. We have very close cooperation with pioneers from all around the world in this field called Transportation Engineering. We are ready to provide better quality education compared to them.
When students start the department, they will be able to take part in the places where they will do their internship, in the projects we do in our research centres, and in foreign countries. Our network for internships is very wide. The opportunities for both finding a job and doing an internship will be provided directly by our department. In addition to these, we provide opportunities for these students to do internships in other units and ministries related to the Ministry of Transport, which we have organic ties with. Our university is a new-generation university established in 2015. In our ERASMUS Program, every student who passes the English proficiency exam can go to ERASMUS, we do not have a quota limit. We have the opportunity to send our students to well-known institutions and organizations that have very famous studies in the field and that are well known. We provide the equal opportunity to every student who passes the English proficiency exam and we put them in ERASMUS program. We also have exchange programs such as Mevlana and Farabi. I can say that our school is the only school that does not reject students as long as the student meets the necessary conditions. As Transportation Engineering, our infrastructure is completely ready. We need nothing but students. We are waiting for our precious students who choose prefer this university. As the Intelligent Transportation Systems Department, we have 157 graduate students. We graduated 27 of them. Among them are our overseas students. 40 lecturers who have these students do thesis are waiting for our students. In Turkey, the Department of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Technologies is only available at our university. Apart from that, we held the International Intelligent Transportation Systems conference for the first time in 2018. We realized the second in 2021 and we will do the third. At the same time, we developed the Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine, which is the only one in Turkey. We established our research center and laboratory. When the student comes, he will find all the opportunities here. That is a fact that if our students can make conscious choices by considering the infrastructure and superstructure, there are many opportunities to find a job. We are able to find employment opportunities for our students even while they are working, through cooperation with other local governments, traffic studies, feasibility studies and projects we have done so far. After graduation, they can provide employment in all metropolitan municipalities, in the transportation coordination center, in international companies, and in some ministries. Considering that you are asking why I should choose Transportation Engineering, I would like to say that we are now in the digital age. Transport is not just something like logistics or an area to work in local government. We are talking about a multidisciplinary, multisectoral field. We realize that logistics has come to the fore in the pandemic. This the era of digital, logistics and mobility. All of these are not the domain of one single engineering branch. In other words, a student who will come here will learn about the current issues in the basic areas of Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering. In addition, they will have the ability and possibility to work in areas such as transportation planning and transportation by using simulation programs. Therefore, we invite you to such a future. When you graduate from here, we plan to train you with full knowledge of the field as a project engineer. If you want to make an academic career, our graduate programs have been present since 2018. You can get master's and doctorate degrees in Intelligent Transportation Systems and progress academically as a lecturer or research assistant. I promise that you will receive a very respectable response on international platforms. Because all of our staff, all of our colleagues, very consciously, are waiting for students who will choose this place by making preparations for about 1 year, by providing things that are difficult to find in Transportation Engineering. Why would you say Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University? Bandırma is a logistics base. It is the intersection centre of the highway, railway, seaway and airline. It is 2 hours to Izmir, 1 hour to Balikesir, 1 hour to Bursa and 2 hours to Istanbul. Apart from that, Bandırma is the only university in this field of Transportation Engineering since it is a newly established University and it has established its specialization in Intelligent Transportation Systems. In other words, Transportation Engineering will produce a graduate who can compete with the world by being adorned with Intelligent Transportation Systems. In this sense, I can support our claim as follows. Infrastructure and superstructure facilities such as all kinds of master's, doctorate, research centres, and laboratories are available for our future students. Along with these comes our railway connection with Ankara. Now you can reach Ankara in 3 hours. Bursa will be half an hour away by railway to Bursa. Our students will be the people who will determine Turkey's transportation planning future and transportation strategies, as we take part in the strategic action plans in this regard, either as a reporter or as direct participants. We will train tomorrow's Ministers of Transport, and tomorrow's General Managers of Highways and Mayors.
