Biomedical Device Technology Program

Hello, I'm Lecturer Cansu Akbay. I am the head of the Electronics and Automation Programme at the Vocational School of Health Services of Yuksek Ihtisas University. The Biomedical Device Technology Programme was added to the Vocational School of Health Services of Yuksek Ihtisas University in the autumn term of the 2019-2020 academic year. The programme will have its first graduates in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. It is a two-year associate degree programme that aims to train intermediate staff to perform technical actions such as maintenance, repair, calibration, and troubleshooting on medical devices during their production, sale, installation and deactivation. Since biomedical is an interdisciplinary branch of science, the course content of our programme is very comprehensive. Courses such as Physics from fundamental sciences; Direct Current Circuit Analysis, Alternating Current Circuit Analysis, Electronic Components and Analysis, Digital Electronics courses from electronic sciences; and Anatomy and Physiology from medical sciences are given in the programme. It also includes courses such as Operating Room and Life Support Devices, Treatment Devices, Physiological Markers and Medical Imaging Devices where we study each device separately. We have an electronic laboratory to perform the practice sections of courses such as Direct Current Circuit Analysis, Alternating Current Circuit Analysis, Digital Electronics, Electronic Components and Analysis which are from our electronic courses. Apart from that, we have a laboratory with a biomedical instrumentation device to analyse and further understand the electronic structures of physiological signal monitoring devices. In addition, there are also three medical devices in the Simulation Laboratory belonging to the Vocational School of Health Services. We are able to provide a practical training by using these medical devices in our lessons. There is a 21-day summer internship in our programme which takes place between the 2nd and 3rd terms. Students can perform this summer internship in health institutions. With our approval they can also do them in medical device companies that provide medical device sales and after-sale services, technical services, production along with research and development activities. Apart from doing their summer internship, students will take a professional practice course in their 4th term. Our students take this course practically in health institutions on on-site devices. Graduates of the programme can work in all health institutions, especially in hospitals, companies that provide medical device sales and after-sales services, in companies that provide a medical device technical service, along with companies that provide medical device calibration and medical device production. They can also work in the research centres of universities. Yuksek Ihtisas University is a thematic university and provides education as a health university. Students of the Vocational School of Health Services are provided with an open access to the internet, wireless internet connection, and documents related to lessons and programmes in the library. Apart from this, there are various student groups both in Baglum Campus and Balgat Campus. With these student societies, students can develop themselves socially, culturally and scientifically. The leading objective of graduates is to be appointed as public personnel in health institutions. In addition, after graduation, students can earn the right to complete a bachelor's degree in engineering departments such as Biomedical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering by taking the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) conducted by the Assessment Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).
