Green Campus Facilities

Hello. I am Professor Cemal Koyunoğlu, Inonu University Green Campus Coordinator. Today, I would like to brief you on the green campus studies at our university. You know, economic development, the population and our consumption habits are changing and growing rapidly. As a result, our already scarce resources are being despised and there are big problems in transferring them to future generations. Our university, which is not insensitive to these problems, has focused on green campus studies since 2017 and has made great progress in this field. I would like to briefly summarize our work in this field. Our campus is built on 7000 acres of land and consists of 3100 acres of woodland and green space, 3716 acres of natural green space and 184 acres of hard ground and building floor. As Green Campus Coordinator, we strive to both protect and take this green texture to a higher level with the thousands of trees we plant every year. Transportation culture has been developed in our university, especially 2600 staff commute by shuttles every day and thousands of our students are provided with electric Tram buses provided by the Metropolitan Municipality. In addition, we have a 6000-meter walkway and 3200 meters bike path on campus. In recent years, all buildings built in our university are carried out in accordance with the green building concept. In all subsequent projects, projecting processes in accordance with the green building concept continue with the same idea. In addition, we have 2 double-outlet electric vehicle charging stations in our university, one on our central campus and the other in our OSB Vocational School. We have 7 drinking water wells in our campus area. 735 cubic meters of drinking water per hour are supplied from these wells. The drinking water of all our academic and administrative buildings is provided free of charge here.
We have implemented a zero waste system for all our academic and administrative units. All of the solid wastes, chemical wastes, glass and so on collected in these units are sorted and some of them are recycled and those that need to be disposed of are disposed of by those concerned in a way that does not harm the nature. We try to raise awareness of our students and staff with our education activities in the field of green campus with various public institutions and organizations, especially our Provincial Directorate of Environment and Urbanization. As a result of these activities, it was possible to bring 90% of the recycling from academic and administrative units back into the economy. These studies we do as Green Campus Coordinator are evaluated by UI Green Metric, a worldwide evaluation organization, and our world ranking is determined. The UI Green Metric evaluation agency is a large evaluation organization of which nearly 1,000 universities are members and determines the sustainable green campus ranking of university campuses with its ranking. In 2020, 912 universities from 84 countries applied to this evaluation institution, and as a result of the evaluations, we as Inonu University ranked 340th in the world. In Turkey, we are ranked 18th. Of course, this is not a point that satisfies us. Our aim is to be in the top 100 in the world and in the top 10 in Turkey. Finally, I would like to suggest to our young friends who will choose university: A world that will live sustainable will only happen with the activities and contributions that we will show together as a society. We continue to carry out our activities together with our university Green Campus Student Community. But these activities are not activities that will be completed or completed immediately. That's what sustainability requires. I am sure that if you choose us, you will contribute a lot to our work and you will be proud and excited to have left a greener campus for your friends who will come after you.
