Department of Sociology

Hi, I am Zuhal Syla Erdem. I am a second year student in the Department of Sociology at Baskent University. Department of Sociology is located at the Baglica Campus of Baskent University. Our department aims to educate experienced sociologists, as Turkey also needs, who have sociological point of view, can analyze social data, experts in their fields, and know qualitative and quantitative research techniques. In our department, generally in the first two years an introduction to sociology courses, an introduction to philosophy and psychology courses are given. In the second year the elective courses start. Students can choose elective courses, which consist of the lower branches of sociology, according to their area of interest. For example, courses such as sociology of education, sociology of migration, introduction to women's studies, developmental psychology, and sociology of family. Internship is not compulsory in our department, but graduation project is required. We are setting up a topic with our advisor and preparing a graduation project. The graduation project is going to the delegation and if it passes the committee, we are eligible to graduate. The Department of Sociology is a department with diverse business fields. Starting with the Prime Ministry, we have the opportunity to work in various ministries. Apart from that, we have a chance to work in private companies and organizations like TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), YOK (Higher Education Council), Turkish Statistical Institute, General Directorate of Security as a sociologist, specialist, assistant specialist or as an assistant in the Public Relations Department. In addition, we can be philosophy teachers by studying the pedagogical formation. We also have a chance to progress in academic path by staying at university. In the rest of the video, another friend of mine studying in our department will talk briefly about her experience she had in this department of Baskent University.
Hi, I am Helin Tugche Ezgin. I am a second year student in the Department of Sociology at Baskent University. I had a special interest in community-related events. I was wondering about the main effects in the events that happened. That is why I chose the sociology department. What was important to me during my university choice period was what I will gain after graduation beside university diploma. Upon this, when I saw the strengths of the teaching staff at the Baskent University and the activities at the university, namely the seminars and conferences offered to students, I chose Baskent University in accordance with these possibilities. While studying in the sociology department, our education can continue more effectively and consciously through, first of all communication with professors, and the establishment of a dialogue with us. I also benefit from our library while I am searching for sources regarding our courses and researches or studying during exam periods. I want to work in the advertising industry after I will finish the sociology department. That is why I am taking extracurricular courses on advertising and communication. If friends who is going to come to Baskent University, Sociology department have a special interest in the events in society and cannot stay indifferent to the events in society, this department is the right choice for them.
