Vocational School of Forestry

I am Associate Professor Hatice Yılmaz. I am the Head of the Landscape and Ornamental Plants Breeding Program. At the same time, I am the assistant manager of the Vocational School of Forestry. The Vocational School of Forestry was founded in 2000 in order to train intermediate staff equipped with knowledge of the technology and requirements of the age for the benefit of forestry, forest products industry, landscaping and areas that interact with them. There are currently 4 main programs that train students. Another program has been opened, but we have not yet received students, we will do so next year. These programs are the Furniture and Decoration Program, Hunting and Wildlife Program, Irrigation Technology Program, Landscape and Ornamental Plants Breeding Program. Our vocational school uses the same campus with the Faculty of Forestry in Bahçeköy Campus of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. There are 11 instructors working in our vocational school. But we are a lucky vocational college. Our Faculty of Forestry teachers, with whom we share the same campus, provide support in the courses. 40 Faculty of Forestry lecturers contribute to our courses in a year. Apart from that, we get support from four other members who are well known in the sector. These experienced people teach about what they’ve learned to students. We provide our basic courses such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with the support of Istanbul University. Our vocational school has an agreement with Mendel University, Czech Republic, as a part of the Erasmus program. Our teachers and students can benefit from exchange programs if they meet the requirements. Likewise, if they meet the foreign language requirements, our students have the opportunity to complete an internship abroad with Erasmus support. We are also included in the Farabi Program. While some of the students who choose our Graduate School come to here pursue a career, some of them come to learn about a profession and to pursue a hobby. Therefore, the student profile of the vocational school is quite varied, and we have students from many age groups. Some of our students start working as soon as they graduate, and some of our students take the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) and continue their 4-year education life in many different departments. Students taking the DGS can transfer to forestry engineering, landscape architecture, forest industry engineering, hunting and wildlife engineering, industrial design, interior architecture, and irrigation departments of agriculture faculties. Our vocational school is currently using the laboratories and infrastructure facilities of the Faculty of Forestry. We use the library, too. In the upcoming period, efforts are underway to set up the laboratories of our vocational school. A Flower Arrangement Program has been opened in our vocational school. Student admission will start in the next academic year, that is, in the 2021-2022 academic year. I would like to especially mention the following to the students who will choose Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Vocational School of Forestry. The Forestry Graduate School was established in Bahçeköy Campus, in a great and advantageous location. The Atatürk Arboretum, Bahçeköy Forest Nursery, Belgrad Forest and our university's research forest will be the setting which they will use as a living laboratory. While benefiting from all the opportunities of Istanbul, I think that there is no other university that provides such a space to conduct studies in nature. At the same time, sharing the same campus with Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, which has a long history, offers our students the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge of the Faculty of Forestry's faculty members, to benefit from the infrastructure facilities and to use the facilities such as the library. Similar to the other vocational schools of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, which is an institution, the programs of our school are always the top choice of students.
