Civil Engineering

I am Professor Metin İpek, Head of Sakarya University of Applied Sciences, Technology Faculty, Civil Engineering Department. Our department consists of 7 sub-disciplines in total: construction, building material, hydraulic, geotechnics, mechanics, transportation and building management. We provide programs to train civil engineers at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. Civil engineering departments are departments that focus on quantitative studies. We can say that approximately 70% -80% of our work is based on mathematics. In the first years, basic engineering courses are provided, and even in the first year, we begin with physics, chemistry and mathematics courses. Over the years, as we come to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades, vocational courses increase. Civil engineering is a very broad field of engineering. Courses are given about all these structures, to give an example: Basic courses such as steel structures, hydraulics, hydro-mechanics, transportation, structural statics, reinforced concrete, basic engineering, soil mechanics, building materials related to dams are given in our department. As a civil engineering department, we have laboratories that are essentially needed by an engineer, such as building, building materials, and soil mechanics labs. In addition to this, since we are an applied engineering branch - in other words, as the Faculty of Technology - we have two workshops in addition to these laboratories where we help students practice. Our laboratories and workshops are completely sufficient in terms of equipment. These workshops are constantly operational and ready. We have Erasmus agreements for the benefit of our students, we have agreements with a total of 16 universities in Europe. We can send our students abroad with Erasmus.
In our department, we organize “Civil Engineers Days” for our undergraduate students every year. In these events, we invite and host our colleagues who have experience in the sector and have been involved in the construction of extraordinary structures. As faculty members, we strive to present our scientific studies in international and national symposiums. The work of civil engineers is very wide, from bridges to buildings, to railways, many structures involve civil engineering. Students who graduate from our department can choose two paths. They can work in the project offices, that is, directly involved in projects, or they can work in the field, in construction sites. They can work as engineers in public institutions and organizations. In addition, students can become academics, and this path is open to them. I advise students who will choose our department to choose the department if they are interested in it. Civil engineering is a profession where people who are fond of their freedom can work in a fun environment. Sakarya University of Applied Sciences is located in a campus surrounded by nature. It is also located close to big cities such as Istanbul and Ankara. As far as I know, it is among the top 3 most livable cities. Sakarya University of Applied Sciences offers accommodation, food and transportation facilities to the students with the contribution of the municipality. Private and Public dormitories can be used.
