Field Crops
I am Lecturer Rahime Cengiz. I am the Head of the Field Crops Department of the Faculty of Agriculture of our university. Our department focuses on plants that feed almost the entire world. Among these, there are many plant species such as cereals, edible grain legumes, industrial plants, meadow pasture forage plants, medicinal aromatic plants, fiber plants. In this regard, we carry out research activities related to these plants both in our country, in our region and in our province. Especially since field crops produce raw materials for the agriculture-based industry, they have a wide cultivation area both in the world and in our country. The problems caused by the global climate change we have experienced in recent years require us to find solutions to these problems and to train agricultural engineers who are trained and capable of producing solutions to these problems. Our department courses have been planned accordingly. We carry out our work in fields such as phytosanitary, seed breeding, quality and biotechnology, as well as plant breeding and breeding techniques in field crops. Our goal is to train agricultural engineers who will be able to develop agriculture that will help humanity in the future, incorporating a sustainable agriculture understanding and be able to solve these agricultural problems. In addition to the courses of the Department of Field Crops and common elective courses, our students also take the basic courses of the Faculty of Agriculture. In addition, they also take courses specific to field crops, on the cultivation and breeding of these crops. They also take phytosanitary courses on these plants, biotechnology studies on plants, and courses on seed production and quality. At the same time, when they graduate from our university, we provide them with the knowledge about agricultural legislation of our country and the world in order to make them aware of such matters. The Faculty of Agriculture, Field Crops Department has biotechnology, tissue culture and quality laboratories, and we also have a computer lab that our students can use. In these laboratories, we carry out the research studies of our undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the projects of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) and the European Union. In the future, we will continue our work by developing this infrastructure thoroughly.
Sakarya University of Applied Sciences has Mevlana, Farabi and Erasmus Coordinatorships. Our Field Crops Department students can apply for open programs through this coordination office in order to complete some of their education abroad. Graduates of the Field Crops Department can work in the Provincial and District Directorates of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, research institutes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, other agricultural research public institutions, agricultural cooperatives, agricultural production factories. They also have the opportunity to work independently as agricultural consultants and in their own laboratories. They also can establish their own farms and to produce agricultural products. Those who want to become academicians can continue their graduate education after completing their undergraduate studies. I recommend the following to the students who will choose the Department of Field Crops of the Faculty of Agriculture of our university. We want qualified students who are particularly environmentally sensitive, open to innovations, who can design projects, who are fond of research, who can produce solutions to the problems of the last century, who can think mathematically. We believe that we will carry out great projects and research with them. For students coming from outside of Sakarya, we have both public and private dormitories within our university, and also a food hall. Students are informed about possible scholarships that they apply to. We are trying to get them used to the city by organizing social and cultural activities, so they can get to know the city. We welcome all students who are interested in Sakarya University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops.
