Environmental Engineering
I'm Professor Lokman Hakan Tecer. I am the Head of Environmental Engineering Department at Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Engineering Faculty. Our department, affiliated with the Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Engineering Faculty, opened its doors to our students in 1993 and started its educational activities with the leading academic community of our country and our region. It is one of the oldest and most established environmental engineering departments in Turkey. For 28 years, we have trained hundreds of environmental engineers and scientists with our strong academic staff, and we continue to do so. Çorlu Engineering Faculty and Environmental Engineering Department located in the center of Trakya, the most dynamic region of the country's economy. It shows its difference in environmental engineering education in Turkey with its academic staff, infrastructure, industry collaborations and research facilities, and its understanding of social responsibility to solve the problems of its country and its region. Environment is the physical, social, cultural and natural habitat in which humans and other living things interact throughout their lives. In other words, the environment is actually a whole of universal values. Environmental engineering is a profession that is tasked with solving environmental problems caused by the increase in population and changing living standards in today's world with an engineering approach for human health and the protection of the environment. Environmental engineers, while performing this profession, come up with a solution that will meet the needs of today without risking the wellbeing of future generations. This is actually the purpose of the Environmental Engineering Department and the education of environmental engineers. In line with this purpose, we have created an appropriate curriculum and course catalogs in our departments. Basic engineering courses are taught in the first year of the Environmental Engineering Department. More special courses for the engineering branch are taught in the second year, and profession-based courses are now taught in the 3rd and 4th years. Particularly in the 3rd and 4th grades, elective courses that our students can choose according to their interests are also taught. Thus, each of our students will have received enough education related to the field they want to specialize in. Basic engineering courses include courses such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, as well as Environmental Chemistry, Structural Statics, Basic Operations and Computer Technologies. There are profession-oriented courses in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. These include courses such as Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology, Solid Wastes, Environmental Management Systems, Industrial and Domestic Wastewater Treatment, Water Supply. In addition to these theoretical courses, our students also have practical lessons and laboratory facilities in our department. We can list these as Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Basic Operations Laboratory, Air Pollution Laboratory, Solid Waste Laboratory, Industrial and Domestic Waste Water Treatment Laboratory and Water Quality Control Laboratories. Our students are required to do an internship for 60 working days. In addition, they can do experimental work within the scope of graduation projects, as well as make a thesis study in the form of a graduation thesis by doing research in the industrial facilities in our region within the scope of education that responds to the needs of the sector. The point I want to focus on here is that we apply an education model based on the needs of the sector. Our faculty has changed the education model of our department since 2018 and transformed it into a modern education style that is intertwined with the sector. For example, our 4th grade students spend 3 days a week in factories and workplaces in the region during their last semester in sectors related to their profession. In this way, they can find the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned here in companies related to their fields in the sector. In addition, they can find employment opportunities after graduation.
The district of Çorlu, where our department is located, is the second largest settlement in the Thrace Region after Istanbul, with a population of 300 thousand. As it is a bridge between Asia and Europe, it caused the industry of Istanbul to flock to the region. Çorlu has become one of the important industrial centers of our country. Approximately 1700 industrial and industrial facilities operate in this region. Our department has the mission to train qualified engineers needed by the industry, especially for our region. In this direction, we conduct scientific researches in order to train qualified engineers needed by the private and public sector in our region. By getting to know our region, we transfer this potential to our students' education with our strong academic staff. We establish collaborations so that our students can receive practical training in industrial facilities in our region. Thus, by having our students practice their theoretical knowledge in the sector, we both ensure their professional development and increase their employment chances after graduation. As a result, with the education model intertwined with the sector, we reflect the industrial potential in our region to the education and training quality of our students. We ensure that they are trained as qualified engineers. After graduation, we create the employment opportunities in these workplaces with the collaborations we provide and the agreements we make. In addition, we can also benefit from student exchange programs such as Erasmus Plus. In line with the quota given by our faculty regularly every year, we enable our students to study and do internship abroad for a certain period of time. Our students can work as environmental engineers in the private sector with the knowledge, equipment and experience they have gained in our department. They can work as waste manager and treatment facility manager in industrial establishments. In addition, they can be employed as environmental officers and environmental engineers in reference laboratories or environmental consultancy companies. In public sector, they can work in institutions and organizations such as the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and Provincial Directorates, State Hydraulic Works, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, provincial organizations, provincial and district municipalities, and TÜBİTAK. In addition, our students can carry out their professions with the engineering offices and consultancy companies they will establish in this field. Education activities, university-industry collaborations and research activities have been carried out successfully for many years in our department. The academic infrastructure of our faculty and department is getting stronger day by day. It has physical, cultural and social competencies. With our industry, population and transportation infrastructure, we are an important center of education, science and technology, not only in the Thrace Region but also among the Balkan countries. For students who prefer Environmental Engineering Department at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Engineering Faculty, with the education model that is intertwined with the sector, we offer the opportunity to get to know the sector and to learn the profession practically to graduate as a qualified engineer. While making your choice of profession and university; We want you to evaluate by looking at the academic staff of the university, its research infrastructure, its relations with industry and sector, and the projects it has developed. In this regard, we are waiting for you to Thrace, Tekirdağ and Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Faculty of Engineering.
