Textile Engineering
Hello, I am Professor Reza Atav. I am the Head of Textile Engineering Department at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Engineering Faculty. Our department started its educational activities in the 2008-2009 academic year. Our department offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. As of now, we have more than 100 undergraduate students, more than 30 graduate students and about 10 doctoral students. We have three PhD graduates so far. 45 graduate students and more than 200 of undergraduate students have graduated from our programs. In our department, primarily basic courses of textile engineering are taught. In this sense, besides the courses such as textile engineering covering fiber, yarn, weaving and knitting subjects, courses such as dye finishing lessons related to textile chemistry and finishing, pre-finishing, dyeing technology, printing technology and finishing technology are offered. At the same time, there are courses in our department on garment technology. In addition to these basic textile engineering courses, basic sciences, physics and chemistry courses are included as elective or compulsory courses in our department. In our department, we have 60 courses, 53 of which are compulsory and 7 are elective. In their last year, our students also carry out 2 research-applied studies, namely the Textile Engineering Project and the graduation project. In our department, there are separate laboratories for every stages of textile. Some of these are at the installation stage, some are in the form of more advanced laboratories. There are laboratories related to various branches of textile in our department, including Fiber-Yarn Laboratory, Advanced Textile Materials Laboratory, Dye Finishing Laboratory, Physical Textile Inspection Laboratory, Weaving Laboratory, Knitting Laboratory and Non-Woven Textiles Laboratory. In our department, summer internships that will last 60 working days in total, covering 3 summer terms are required. In our department, apart from the internship in the 2nd, 4th and 6th semesters, an education model intertwined with the sector is applied in the 7th and 8th semesters. Within the scope of the education model that is intertwined with the sector, students work 3 days a week in an industrial enterprise and while working there, they also prepare their theses.
Our department has agreements with 6 different European countries within the scope of bilateral agreements of Erasmus Program. Countries such as Slovenia, Greece and Romania are among them. Until now, 7 of our students have spent a semester in Europe under the bilateral Erasmus agreement. Likewise, 11 of our faculty members benefited from the program within the scope of teaching mobility. In addition, 8 researchers from Europe have visited our department so far. Our department has two traditional international congresses. The first of these is the ICONTEX Congress held in 2011. This is an internationally participated congress. At the same time, a second congress called ICONWOOLF was held for the first time in 2019. We are planning to organize the second and third congresses next year. In addition, our department participated as co-organizer in the CIRAT Congress held in Tunisia in 2014. In addition, as our region is a very busy industrial zone, an academic workshop was held for the industry in 2016. We organized an activity called an academic perspective on current problems in these places. Of course, our students can take part in direct production in various companies as a textile engineer. In addition to production, they can also work in other departments such as planning, marketing and sales. In addition, some of our graduates also have their own businesses as entrepreneurs. At the same time, we have graduates working as researchers in these centers, especially due to the increasing concentration of R&D centers in recent years. In addition, they can work as experts or assistant experts in fields that require textile engineering in various state institutions. Our department is located in the center of 4 organized industrial zones and 1 European Free Zone. By using this geographical location advantage, a lot of emphasis is placed on practical education in our department. In addition to summer internships during their 4-year education and training life, our students are able to go to companies during the semester for the applications in of the course material. Our students continue their education by working 3 days a week in an industrial enterprise in the 7th and 8th semesters of the senior year within the scope of the education model that we implement by using the advantage of the geographical location of our region. In addition, our university provides academic education, English education and professional life coaching support to our students under the AKADEKİP Program (Academic Support, Coaching and Employment Program) signed by the Turkish Textile Finishing Industrialists Association. Our students, who will start education in the Textile Engineering Department, carry out their activities in Çorlu. Our main campus is located in the center of Tekirdağ. All kinds of social facilities are available on our main campus. Indoor sports facilities, swimming pools, social facilities and dormitories are available. I wish success to all candidates who will take the exam this year. At the same time, I would like to state that we will be pleased to see those who want to be the textile engineers of the future in our department.
