Landscape Architecture
Hi everyone, I'm Professor Rüya Yilmaz. I am the Head of Landscape Architecture department of Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture. With the establishment of Namık Kemal University in 2006, the Department of Landscape Architecture provided education within the Faculty of Agriculture, and in 2012, our department started to provide education and training in the Faculty of Fine Arts Design and Architecture, which is our current faculty. Since then, we opened a PhD program in 2014. We currently have a young and dynamic, active education staff. The work of a landscape architect consists of making plans to protect and repair natural and cultural resources against factors that threaten the future of humanity. And also consist of planning and designing landspaces to improve people's quality of life. Landscape architecture is the only professional discipline that takes action considering ecology. In the Department of Landscape Architecture, our courses are either compulsory or elective. From the first year, courses such as introduction to landscape architecture, basic design, planning, drawing courses, dendrology related to plant recognition, Ground Covering Lawn Plants are provided. Project courses begin in the second year and many elective courses are also start being offered to students. We have a wide range of courses such as Resource Analysis, Turkish Landscape, Landscape Management, Material Knowledge, Construction, Nature Conservation, Environmental Problems, Environmental Impact Assessment courses. We have workshops and studios so that we can provide landscape architecture education in a way that students benefit the most from. We have 6 studios for project courses. In addition, we have a model workshop, two classrooms where we carry out theoretical courses and a computer laboratory where we provide our computer courses. Since the profession of landscape architecture is focused on the outdoors and an important part of the work are about the outdoors, our campus area constitutes an important application area for us. The internship is divided into two parts, one begins at the end of the second grade and the other at the end of the third grade. At the end of the second year, we provide our students with a 20-day internship. Likewise, at the end of the third grade, we provide an office internship which lasts for 20 days. In our education program, students who start taking the project courses from the second grade deliver their projects every semester. Especially in the 7th and 8th semesters, in the last year, students complete their projects for the planning and design studio courses. They also carry out studies in the subjects they are interested in for their final dissertation. In terms of exchange programs, we attach great importance to Erasmus. We have bilateral agreements with Germany, Italy, Bulgaria, Greece and Poland. And 7 of our students have been able to study at these universities. In addition, students can benefit from the Mevlana program if they wish. On the other hand, if the students want to, they can do their internships abroad. Within the framework of Erasmus, our own faculty members have been to many universities abroad to teach.
Our department is very active in international and national congresses, symposiums and workshops. Our faculty members are pioneers in this regard. Our students also participated in international competitions from time to time with their graduation projects. With our contributions, students organize meetings with the students clubs they have founded, like the green architects club. These are undertaken with professors who are experts of their subjects or with other participants who have made contributions to the field. We strive to carry out these studies, which the students also enjoy, periodically at different periods every year. Our students can work in the public and private sectors. Ministries such as Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Culture make up some of the important places that they find work. They can also find work in municipalities and local governments. Environmental protection units, park units, science directorates within the municipalities are also becoming places where our students can find work. On the other hand, our students have the opportunity to work in plantations of the private sector, operation-based companies, construction companies, architecture companies, offices, companies that produce luxury flowers, as well as structure markets. Since we work on recreation, there are many places that landscape architects work at, such as in botanical gardens, highways, national parks. On the other hand, students can also become academics, and 3 of our graduates are currently working as research assistants at different universities. Since the graduates of our department will work both indoors and outdoors, they should be people who love field work, who love nature, who can work outside for a long time, who can think three-dimensionally and who have the ability to do so, who follow technological developments, especially IT technologies. We’d like them to be cooperative and have a desire to improve themselves. In short, it is a suitable department for students who are constantly improving their skills and willing to learn throughout their lives. Tekirdağ is a great and beautiful city, with its natural and cultural resources, which is an important pul-factor for students. Our proximity to Istanbul and our strategic location in Trakya make up the other advantages. Our university campus also offers great benefits for students. We have a social center which is used for social and cultural activities, a library that is open 24/7, large green spaces for recreational use, and sports fields and sports clubs. We can say that the support of our Rectorate in these matters satisfies our students. Having a stadium is also an advantage for students. The fact that we have 80 student clubs which carry out cultural activities and scientific activities makes our university an attractive option to students. Tekirdağ is a city that enjoys the advantages of both small and large cities. The city has become a student city, which makes at enjoyable for students, and many students miss this place after they graduate.
