Physics
Hello, our dear students, my name is Serbülent Yıldırım. I am working as a Professor in the Department of Physics at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. I have been working here since 2008, the year our department has founded. Our department welcomed its first students in 2008. Currently, our department accepts 20 students per year according to the ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). The Physics curriculum in our department is exactly parallel with the undergraduate physics curriculum followed all over the world. It is also a curriculum that follows current developments. It is also compatible with the European Credit Transfer System. Our students can easily adapt to the system during their education abroad. The first two years of our 4-year undergraduate program are spent with courses on basic physics and mathematical methods required by the fundamentals of physics. In the last two years, in addition to the main courses of physics, we have been offering our students many elective courses for specialization purposes. In the first two years, our laboratory courses are also intensive. Our computer, electronics and optics courses are available in the applied parts within the first two years. Graduate education and doctorate programs are also offered by our department. We guide our students for the graduate program in order them to be specialized in certain areas. Our laboratory facilities in our department consists of 2 parts: undergraduate education and research. The courses in undergraduate education laboratories aim to increase the basic physics knowledge and skills of our students. It consists of the practical training they receive under the supervision of their advisors. We teach in the Mechanics and Electricity Laboratory during the 1st year, the Optical Waves Laboratory during the 2nd year and the Modern Laboratory during the 3rd year. As a research laboratory, there is a Solid State Physics Laboratory, Thin Film Solar Cell Laboratory, Optics and Imaging Laboratory, Numerical Computing and Computer Laboratory in our department. Students who want to do an elective internship in our department are offered internship opportunities in the summer period starting from the 2nd grade. They can do their internships either in industry or in research laboratories, in our department or at other universities. Our aim here is to enable students to carry out pioneering studies in determining the interest areas towards graduation in line with their pursuits. In addition, there are compulsory and elective graduation projects in the first and second semesters of the 4th grade. In these projects, students solve a problem they deal with, either practically or theoretically, under the supervision of their advisors.
Since our department’s credit system is compatible with ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), our students can go abroad within the scope of Erasmus. In this context, the credits they have here can be transferred on the opposite side or vice versa. Thus, they continue their education without losing any semester. Our department traditionally has a conference and discussion program for undergraduate students under the name of Physics Days. Our aim here is to invite prominent physicists in our country to the conference and to enable them to interact with our students. In addition, it is to increase the motivation of the students and to provide them with knowledge in different areas of physics. Since our department is a basic science department, we would like to guide our students to the research. Our main expectation from the students in our department is, them to become researcher physicists while pursuing their graduate degree. In addition to this, our students who want to work in the industry and private sector has the opportunity to find jobs in the fields of informatics, electronics, optics and other technical fields with training they receive. The students who will prefer our department in the university exam can choose our department if they basically like physics and if they want to pursue a career as a scientist. Our university and our city are very distinguished and beautiful in terms of the region where it is located. It is far from the crowd of big cities. In addition to all kinds of sports and academic facilities in the campus environment, we enable our students to complete their undergraduate education in a calm environment with our library facilities. The campus of our university and the city of Tekirdağ in general offer many opportunities to our students in this respect. As Tekirdağ Namık Kemal University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Physics, I wish success to all students who will take the university entrance exam, and I would like to announce that we will be happy to see our university and department in their preferences.
