Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre (TÖMER)

Hello, my name is Mehmet Volkan DEMİREL. I am an assistant professor in the department of Turkish and social studies education. I am also the director of the Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre.
Bozok TÖMER (Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre) was established in 2017 to provide Turkish language teaching services to international students who prefer our university. This centre provides Turkish language teaching services to all foreigners, who come to our country for various reasons and want to learn Turkish.
TÖMER (Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre) is primarily used by international students who prefer our university. In addition, foreigners who come to our country for various reasons also receive Turkish education at our centre. In addition, we organise certificate programmes on teaching Turkish as a foreign language for the students studying in the departments of Turkish language teaching, Turkish language and literature, English language teaching, English language and literature. By participating in this certificate programme, our students studying in these departments receive the certificate of teaching Turkish as a foreign language and have the competence to work in this field. Our international students benefit from TÖMER (Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre).


Of course, language teaching also brings with it the learning of culture. I recommend our international students to support their motivation to learn Turkish by learning Turkish culture at the same time. In addition, our students studying in departments related to language and language teaching such as Turkish language teaching, Turkish language literature department, English language teaching and English language literature can add a new competence to their professional competencies by participating in Turkish as a foreign language teaching certificate programmes. Thus, they can improve themselves. In addition, there are students from many nationalities in our centre, and students studying in departments related to language and language teaching can improve themselves in a multicultural environment by participating in the activities in our centre.
At TÖMER (Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Centre), we have two kinds of activities. Our first activity is practical activities. Our practical activities primarily include activities aimed at teaching contemporary Turkish in Turkey. International students who come to Turkey for various reasons and want to learn Turkish can benefit from these activities. Here, they are offered Turkish language teaching services by using contemporary language teaching methods and techniques. In addition, we also organise Turkish level determination exams in the direction of practice. Those who want to certify their Turkish language level, both in Turkey and abroad, can apply to our centre and take Turkish language placement exams, and thus, they can determine their Turkish language level within the competencies of the European language portfolio. In addition, our students studying in the departments of Turkish language teaching, Turkish language literature, English language teaching and English language literature of our university participate in the certificate programmes for teaching Turkish as a foreign language offered by our centre. We inform these students in the field of teaching Turkish as a foreign language. We provide them with the competence of teaching, and in addition to the department they have graduated from, we also provide them with the status of teachers who will teach Turkish as a foreign language in our centre. This is what we do in terms of practice. We also have research duties. In our centre, academics and doctoral graduate students carry out studies on teaching Turkish as a foreign language.In addition, our centre also supports all kinds of research on international students.
