Medical Biochemistry

I am Prof. Dr. Mustafa Baki ÇEKMEN. I am a lecturer at Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine. In our department of Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine, our master's degree started in 2015 and our doctorate in 2018. In our department, there are fourteen active teaching staff, including eight TUS (Medical Speciality Examination) assistants, five doctoral students and one research assistant. Our education and training activities continue in the laboratory of our department, in the ISLAB within our university and in the clinical diagnosis and treatment laboratory of Göztepe Hospital. The faculties we accept for master's degree with thesis are biochemistry and medical biological sciences affiliated to the faculty of medicine, faculty of science, biology department, faculty of veterinary medicine, faculty of dentistry, faculty of pharmacy, molecular, medicine and genetics. All of these are published on the web page. In order to apply for a doctorate, it is required to be a graduate of a medical faculty or to have a master's degree with thesis in medical biochemistry. Current information on this subject is published on our web page before each semester. In addition, one research assistant, eight medical speciality students and five doctoral students are both educating themselves and participating in the educational activities of our department. The main purpose of the teaching in our department is to give a basic background to our health-related students, that is, as you can guess, we give basic information about health on the axis of biochemistry in order to be able to evaluate and research on health to our students who come to our department from multidisciplinary fields. In the following, since our department is related to health and people, we show our students how to take samples from patients or research animals, how to create ready-to-work samples from these samples, in which devices, under which conditions and how to work these samples in order to conduct any research or health-related evaluation. While giving this information to our students, which researches, which analyses will be carried out on which devices; the properties, calibrations, and ideal working conditions of the devices are explained and taught especially through practice. The initial counsellor of our master's and doctoral students who are accepted to our department is temporarily the head of the department. Then, permanent advisors are appointed according to the relationship between students and faculty members and the preferences of the students. In order for our students to present their studies in domestic and international congresses, we support them both as faculty members and financial support is provided by the relevant units of our university. Furthermore, after receiving a certain education, our students can improve their knowledge and experience in national and international educational institutions.
At Istanbul Medeniyet University, we have a new library with a wide range of resources and a large number of scientific works. Our library is very spacious and very suitable for students to work. In addition, the laboratories in our biochemistry department are equipped in accordance with all kinds of research, education and training studies. We have highly advanced and high-tech devices. In addition to these, our laboratory, which was established in Göztepe Hospital to support medical diagnosis, is used for research and education activities when necessary. All our graduate students, i.e. master's and doctoral students with thesis, can benefit from ERASMUS, Farabi and Mevlana exchange programmes. Our department encourages them in this regard. There is no compulsory internship in our department. As for the scholarship opportunities, as you know, scholarships are given to researchers in certain limits in projects linked to TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey) and TÜSEB (Presidency of Health Institutes of Turkey). Our department both supports and encourages our students to participate in these studies. Our master's and doctoral studies take place at the North Campus of Üsküdar, where our rectorate is located. In addition, some of our research and studies are carried out at Göztepe Süleyman Yalçın Training and Research Hospital. Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry are centrally located in Kadikoy and Uskudar, are very easy to reach for education and training and have highly qualified and scientifically valuable faculty members. BİLTAM (Science and Advanced Technology Application and Research Centre) laboratory, which is equipped with advanced technology in a large area in the north campus, established within the rectorate of our department; In addition to these, our biochemistry laboratory in Göztepe Hospital Research Hospital offers a wide range of opportunities. In these laboratories, our graduate students, master's and doctoral students with thesis can easily conduct research and education. We are very close to our graduate students and we are constantly together in laboratory environments. Our main goal is to provide medical biochemistry education to our students and to enable our students to independently follow innovations, produce new projects and manage and direct these projects on their own. For foreign students, YÖK (Council of Higher Education) equivalence certificate is required. Other than that, the conditions are equivalent to domestic students, that is, our Turkish students. These are updated from time to time on the web page. They can work in health, pharmacy, veterinary research institutions in our country and in educational institutions outside our country. Medical biochemistry, postgraduate education at Medeniyet University has very wide laboratory facilities. Our laboratory in Göztepe campus, our BİLTAM laboratory in the university close to the rectorate and our biochemistry department laboratory in the faculty of medicine have sufficient equipment and faculty members for graduate education and training studies. Graduate students are very valuable to us. We are together with them one-to-one in both theoretical and practical education. Our aim is not only to provide education and training, but also to train new academicians and new lecturers who will provide education and training later.
