Public Law
Greetings, I am Dr. Derya TEKIN, the Head of the Public Law Department at Istanbul Medeniyet University's Graduate Education Institute. Currently, we offer a master's program with thesis specifically in the field of public law within our department. Our aim is to provide specialized education in various sub-branches of public law, including administration, criminal law, constitutional law, international law, human rights, legal philosophy, and the social process of law. We only accept applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree in law.
To be eligible for our program, applicants are required to obtain a minimum score of 70 in the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) and 60 in a foreign language exam recognized by the YÖK (Higher Education Board). Additionally, we conduct a written exam or interview as part of the application process, and admission is granted accordingly. Our teaching staff consists of approximately 20 lecturers, some of whom have completed their master's and doctoral degrees in countries such as the United States, England, Belgium, France, and Germany. We consider their experiences abroad, academic practices, and traditions to be of great value for our students. While our program covers classical and traditional subjects within the sub-branches of public law, we also prioritize the inclusion of courses that address current developments. This includes topics such as digital technologies and the constitution, global administration, and digital transformations in document law. Our students have the opportunity to work with any teacher specializing in public law, and our teaching staff is well-equipped to cater to their needs. We emphasize the importance of providing our students with an education that enables them to express themselves accurately and effectively in academic life. Consequently, assessment methods such as writing articles or delivering presentations are commonly preferred by our professors. In fact, as part of the seminar course, this year we introduced a requirement for students to present at national or international congresses in order to succeed in the course. This allowed our students to rehearse their presentations in class before delivering them on these platforms. We have a newly developing library at our disposal, located in Göztepe, which is being enriched with physical resources, including legal materials, on a daily basis. Additionally, our students have access to online databases and other digital resources provided by the university. They can also benefit from the ERASMUS Plus student mobility program. As the Faculty of Law, we have ERASMUS agreements with universities in 13 countries, including Germany, Italy, Spain, and Greece. For our international students, we require a law school graduate status recognized by the YÖK (Higher Education Council) as a condition, and they are not required to meet the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) requirement. However, the language requirement still applies to them, and their applications are complemented by a written exam or interview.
The contribution of our program to students may vary depending on their individual expectations. For some, the master's program in public law with thesis serves as an academic milestone, while others, such as attorneys, judges, and prosecutors, choose our program to further enhance their knowledge. Perhaps the greatest strength of our program lies in the vast experience of our professors. Our faculty includes professors who have completed their undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees at esteemed universities in Turkey, as well as a young and dynamic staff with international training. With the combined expertise of our faculty, we strive to offer an interactive and innovative educational experience.I extend my best wishes for success to all candidates who will be applying to our program.
