History
I am Professor İsmail Hakkı KADI, the Head of the Department of History at Istanbul Medeniyet University Graduate Education Institute. The History Department of Istanbul Medeniyet University was established in 2011, offering both a master's program with a thesis and a doctoral program. Our aim is to provide education that encompasses national and international experiences in the field of historiography within our master's and doctoral programs, which are conducted at the South Campus of our university.
For candidates who are not history graduates, a scientific preparation program is required before entering our master's program. Candidates who meet the foreign language and ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Exam) score requirements set by our department and announced by the institute are eligible to apply for our master's and doctoral programs. Even graduates from disciplines other than history can apply to our master's programs, but they may be required to complete a scientific preparation program. Candidates who have completed their undergraduate or graduate education in the field of history can directly apply to our doctoral programs.
To graduate from our master's and doctoral programs, students must successfully complete 9 courses, totaling 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) and 24 national credits. Additionally, they are required to write and defend a master's or doctoral thesis. Our history department comprises nearly 30 faculty members who have received their academic education from prestigious universities in countries such as Germany, the United States of America, France, Austria, and the Netherlands. They provide teaching and academic guidance to our students, making significant scientific contributions to the field through their publications in renowned journals and publishing houses. Our faculty members also receive continuous support from TÜBİTAK (Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council) projects, other international projects, and scholarship programs.
Within our program, courses cover various areas including general Turkish history, ancient age, middle age, new age, modern age, the history of the Republic of Turkey, and the history of Ottoman institutions and civilization. We also provide academic counseling to our students. The content of our courses is regularly updated to incorporate national and international knowledge.
We take a flexible approach in our department to accommodate students' interests, allowing them to determine the subjects they will work on and choose their advisors. Our faculty members maintain close relationships with their students, providing guidance and support throughout the course selection process and thesis writing. Through the support received from national and international projects and scholarship programs such as TÜBİTAK (Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council), TÜBA (Turkish Academy of Sciences), and Humboldt, our students have the opportunity to participate as scholars and enhance their academic growth.
Students can actively contribute to their academic and social development by engaging in workshops, symposiums, and conferences frequently organized by our faculty members. Our university boasts the most well-equipped library in Turkey, which is a valuable resource for our history department's master's and doctoral students. We have established student exchange agreements with universities such as Rome in Italy, Siegen and Bonn in Germany, as well as various universities in Slovakia and Bulgaria, enabling our students to complete part of their education at these institutions.
One of the distinguishing features of history programs in Turkey is the expertise of our faculty members in both domestic and international archives and resources. They are well-versed in the archives and resources of countries such as England, Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. We actively encourage foreign students to apply to our program. Although foreign students are exempt from the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam) requirement, they must demonstrate proficiency in Turkish grammar and in a language other than their mother tongue.
With our young and dynamic staff, we believe that our program effectively incorporates both national and international historiography, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the field.
