Greetings, I am Sevgi Coskun YILMAZ, a faculty member at the Faculty of Political Sciences in the Department of Economics. Additionally, I hold the position of vice president within the department of economics. Established as a state university in 2010, Istanbul Medeniyet University offers a comprehensive range of academic programs, one of which is the department of economics. Our department provides both master's and doctoral programs, with a focus on economics thesis. These programs are designed for students seeking to acquire advanced technical and theoretical knowledge in the field of economics, as well as develop skills for conducting academic and scientific research.
Our programs welcome applications from graduates of any undergraduate program, as well as those who will complete their undergraduate studies by the final registration date. For admission to our master's program with thesis, applicants must obtain a minimum score of 70 in the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam), and a foreign language proficiency score of 55. As for the doctoral program, we require a minimum score of 75 in the ALES and 60 in the foreign language proficiency exam.
The department of economics boasts a young, dynamic, and highly accomplished academic staff that is committed to continuous improvement. Our faculty members have received education from prestigious universities in both Turkey and abroad. Before embarking on the thesis stage, our students are required to complete a set of mandatory courses, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and seminar courses. In addition to these compulsory courses, we offer a wide selection of elective courses from which students can choose according to their interests.
Upon successful completion of the coursework, doctoral students must pass a proficiency exam before proceeding to the thesis stage. Subsequently, they can obtain their degree by writing a successful thesis. Each student enrolled in our programs is assigned an academic advisor based on their interests and the expertise of the faculty members. We make every effort to accommodate students who express a preference to work with specific faculty members, especially if the faculty member is willing to supervise their work.
Moreover, our department organizes departmental seminars once or twice a month, providing our graduate students with an opportunity to attend these sessions and listen to esteemed academics who are experts in their respective fields. Our students also have the chance to present their own work during these seminars. Furthermore, our students can enhance their professional and academic skills by participating in projects conducted by the university.
At Istanbul Medeniyet University, we offer various educational and research opportunities to our students. One such resource is the Istanbul Medeniyet University Agricultural Library, which provides access to a wide range of materials. The library offers computer labs, private study areas, and group study rooms. Additionally, our department features an econometrics laboratory and a computer laboratory exclusively for the use of economics students, should they wish to utilize these facilities for their education and research purposes.
We provide a personalized education plan for each student enrolled in our department, tailored to their individual interests. Furthermore, we strive to support the academic development of all our students. Our goal is to prepare them not only for the domestic job market but also for the global labor market. If applicants to our programs have graduated from universities in Turkey, we require ALES and foreign language proficiency scores. However, if a student has obtained their degree from a foreign university, they can apply with a Turkish equivalence certificate and provide evidence of their foreign language proficiency.
Graduates from our programs find employment opportunities as academic staff members both within Turkey and abroad. Additionally, they secure various positions in public institutions such as the Central Bank, the competition authority, and the Ministry of Finance.
