Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling

Hello, I am Mustafa Atmaca. I’m a third year student in Guidance and psychological counseling department of the education faculty in Baskent University. I want to breifly introduce you to our department. The fundemental purpose of our department, apart from being conducive to people’s acquisition of scientific qualifications, it also ensures the existence of people who are capable of finding solutions to both their educational problems and social problems in general. Generally the classes that are tutored upon our entrance to the faculty, meaning in first grade,are mostly introductory lessons, like introduction to philosophy, introduction to sociology, introduction into educational sciences courses. Aside from that, we as a whole faculty take history and Turkish courses. Other than that, along with third grade we generally take proffessionally relevant classes. These courses are: crisis counseling, family counseling, and psychological group counseling’s analogous courses. There aren’t any classrooms that can be considered to be laboratories in our faculty. However we have individual counseling classrooms assigned for us. Fourth grade students in their first and second semesters generally do some sort of internship there as they perform individual counseling. During this process along with the courses they take students usually find themselves an advisor, and together with their advisor they practice the counseling process in a comprehensive manner. In fact we officially don’t have internships in our department, however along with taking our classes we go to schools to do observation as an internship. We meet with advisors. We take information regarding that. Aside from that we also have voluntarily internships which are usually required during summertime. It’s not necessary to submit a thesis or present a project to graduate. In fact there are no conditions for graduating our department. Generally, a specific grade-point-average is requested, once achieved we can become graduates. When we graduate this department we can work in lots of fields. Amongst these there are a lot of ministries. For example: we can be employed in the Ministry Of Education. We can be employed in the Ministry Of Justice. In educational institutions, in dormitories or private consultation centers, we can work in rehabilitation centers. In fact I want to open my own consultation centre after having worked in one of these places for a certain amount of time. That’s how I planned my career. Guys, in the continuation of our video, a friend who’s studying in our department is going to briefly talk about his experiences during studying in this department of Baskent University.
Hello, I am Hesna Chandir a second year student in the Department of Guidance and psychological counseling in The Faculty of Education in Baskent University. I decided to study this department during the preference period in high school. We seriously need advisors who know and can help us. In order to coach such people, I want to be a good academician. This is why I chose this department. Baskent University’s Faculty of Education is one of the best educational faculties in all Turkish private universities. The tutoring staff is comprehensive. And we have a big chance of reaching them. In every problem we have, or when we get stuck at some point, we can easily go ask and get answers. That’s why I chose it. We benefit from the teaching staff in the department. Whenever we’re bored, tired or want to get information on a subject, we can easily go knock their rooms’ doors and get information. Our transportation to the university is sustained by service cars during certain hours on weekdays and weekends. Apart from that, in our social facilities we have a game hall, refectory, hairdresser, and market. In our campus we have a gymnasium and library. Presently as far as we know our library is one of the biggest libraries in Turkey. It consists of three floors; our study rooms are quite large. We have group study rooms. My objectives after graduation; firstly I want to study master's degree. Then I want to work for a specific period of time in a guidance center and gain experience there. Later on as I improve myself more, I want to go back to Baskent University as an academician. People who want to choose this department should firstly have good ability and will to listen to people. To help people, should have the ability to accept people unconditionally. Connecting with the tutoring staff of Baskent University is quite easy. When we’re stuck, exhausted, or can’t a resolve a certain question mark, we can knock their doors and ask whatever we want. They give us time for as long as we want. The conditions of our school’s campus in comparison to other private universities are quite good. Speaking in terms of Ankara I can say that we have one of the big campuses in Ankara.
