In the master's program, students complete two semesters of coursework before proceeding to the thesis stage. Similarly, in the doctoral program, students complete two semesters of coursework followed by a proficiency thesis proposal and then the thesis stage.
In the field of sociology, our students conduct research and write theses under the guidance of leading sociologists in Turkey. Our faculty members are experts in various areas such as working life, inequalities, stratification, bureaucracy, religion, culture, and art, addressing the current issues of Turkey. Our Sociology Department currently offers a master's program with a thesis, which has been operating for four years and admits students. Research projects are conducted, and theses are written as part of the program. Our department is located at the Göztepe South Campus, along with the Graduate Education Institute.
To apply for our sociology thesis master's program, a minimum foreign language score of 60 is required. Additionally, an ALES score of at least 65 is necessary from the equal weight field. A letter of intent is also required, where candidates convincingly justify their interest in writing a sociology master's thesis, their desire to pursue academic studies at Istanbul Medeniyet University's Department of Sociology, and their proposed subject and methodology. We currently have over 30 fellow students in our graduate program, and this number continues to grow. Each professor is a respected sociologist and a leading figure in their respective fields.
The fall semester includes compulsory courses on scientific research techniques and social theory, while the spring semester features a mandatory research methodology course. Additionally, there are elective courses available. Throughout their graduate studies, our students actively participate in national and international activities organized by the department. We organize an annual social structure workshop during the spring term, where experts and researchers from different universities in Turkey come together to foster a culture of discussion. Our graduate and doctoral students play a crucial role in this culture. We also support our students in seeking research support and designing projects from public or private institutions. Our faculty members possess extensive experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and we aim to share this expertise with young sociologists, enabling them to conduct their own research projects and develop collaborations with various institutions.
Engaging in postgraduate studies in the sociology of civilization holds significant and unique aspects. We prioritize addressing the real and current issues of Turkey and meticulously transforming them into research problematics. By conducting rigorous and methodical research, we strive to understand the society we live in, its origins, its future, and the pressing social issues it faces. This approach allows sociology to contribute to the public good in Turkey effectively.
Moreover, we emphasize the importance of data-driven sociology. Regardless of whether it is qualitative or quantitative, we believe that progress can only be made by analyzing the pieces of reality we have in hand. This holistic understanding of the social world enhances our ability to examine and interpret societal phenomena. The impact of our work is evident, and we often observe quick responses and recognition from society.I invite aspiring sociologists to consider the unique opportunities and contributions that our Sociology Department at Istanbul Medeniyet University offers. We warmly welcome foreign students to apply to our graduate program in the Department of Sociology. It is important to note that our program is conducted in Turkish, and therefore, proficiency in the Turkish language is required.
