Philosophy

I am Professor Mehmet Oktay TAFTALI, the Head of the Department of Systematic Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul Medeniyet University. Our department offers lectures as part of the Graduate Education Institute, catering to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral education. Students in our department also become institute students and register accordingly, with administrative procedures handled by the Graduate Education Institute.
We prioritize maintaining a master-apprentice relationship with our graduate students, fostering a collaborative environment that supports our studies and research. This approach forms the fundamental pedagogical process of philosophy. Our graduate courses, both at the master's and doctoral level, primarily take the form of seminars. Instead of traditional lectures, our teachers engage with students by working on texts together. Students prepare presentations based on assigned or suggested texts, and we process and discuss these presentations collectively. Through written and oral presentations, students have the opportunity to express themselves and delve into philosophical thought, writing articles in academic and scientific formats. This not only contributes to their intellectual growth but also enriches the intellectual landscape of our country.We establish our student relationships based on Socratic pedagogy, or what we locally refer to as the "master-apprentice relationship." Our doors are always open, allowing students to approach us freely without prior permission. They can share their research, discuss their progress, and explore topics they find intriguing. Our philosophy graduates, equipped with excellent written and verbal communication skills from their undergraduate and graduate education, possess versatile abilities. They can excel in various fields, including art criticism, theater criticism, literary criticism, proofreading, editorial work, and culinary text editing in both written and visual media.
