International University
My name is Hady Mansour. I am from Egypt and I am in the 5th year at the Faculty of Medicine at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. I have lived in many places including Saudi Arabia and I came to Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University 5 years ago. After earning my American High School Diploma in Egypt, I decided that I want to study Medicine. I was searching in most of the countries a program that teaches 100% in English at the Faculty of Medicine. When I came to research in Turkey, I visited the website called ‘‘Türkiye Scholarships’’ and there was a branch of the website. It’s called ‘‘Study in Turkey’’. I searched for all of the faculties and universities that teach medicine 100% in English. There were a lot of universities in Turkey, but few of them teach 100% in English. So, I applied to most of them. And after that, I waited for a while until the results came. And I was accepted to most of the universities, in Gaziantep, in Ankara, in İstanbul, and in other places. But I chose Ankara. Because it is the capital and as I asked and researched, it is the most suitable for studying and working. For example, starting the transportation, everything is organized and systematic and it makes you focused more on your studies. Istanbul, for example, is a touristic city. And, it is a little bit crowded as I saw. I have also been to Eskişehir how it is. There were less facilities and accommodations and ministries were not available over there. So, I found out that Ankara will be the best, because all of the embassies, ministries, and accommodations are available and it is easy to have. So, I decided to come to Ankara.
Before coming to Turkey, in general, I was a little bit worried that I was going to a foreign country and I didn’t know the Turkish language then. And I was also worried that I would not find anyone to help me. I didn’t know the culture and the society so well before coming. But after from the first days that I came to Turkey, I get to realize that actually the Turkish citizens are so welcoming and friendly especially to the foreigners. And they are so helpful. So, that blocked my worry a little bit and after that I was also worried about the accommodations and I how I would apply, would it be easy, would someone help me. But, after that, it came to be as good as it could get. For 5 years in Turkey, it changed a lot in me. For example, in the personality. I learned how to adapt in a foreign country. I had a lot of life experiences. Most of them were good, but at the end, I got life experiences out of them in the academy. You will know how to teach yourself and you will know how to educate yourself by the means that you get. And these are some qualities that I didn’t get until I came and studied abroad. When I came to the university, I found that professors, and the doctors, and even the staff, they treat each other like a small family. Academically speaking, I found that also having the professors, the doctors, and the assistants by your side and they are also welcoming all of the questions that you want to ask them. And they are so helpful in that they will not leave you until you know what you want to know. And also, I had a little experience about joining a research, at our Faculty of Medicine. The professors and the assistants were very very helpful and welcoming of the idea of students’ joining a research done by professors and doctors. And that also made us have a big academic experience. Other than that, we have practical lessons and clinical lessons in the one of the best hospitals in Turkey. If I can assume the best hospitals in Turkey, it is Ankara City Hospital. It gives us quite an experience about all of the diseases, malformations and symptoms that you can see. Because, the patients that come to the hospital, they don’t only come from the simple staff. The come from all of the cultural and, socio-economical levels. And we can see all of the diseases that we can actually, possibly see in our curriculum.
At Yıldırım Beyazıt University, when I came 5 years ago, we decided to found a club that represents the international students entitled: ‘‘International Medical Student Association’’ (IMSA) where we have all of the international and Turkish students come together to share the culture and social experiences. And it has been a pleasure to meet a lot of different cultures and societies here where we have a lot of international students. I think Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University has the most diverse nationalities that I saw among all of the other universities. And also, the events that we make from our faculty with the other faculties that we have at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, they gave us a great time and experience for the cultural diversity. I would like to advise to anyone who wants to study abroad first of all, to come Turkey, or even Ankara, or Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, not to hesitate. Because, I know the worry that everyone has before coming or leaving the home country and coming abroad. But this worry will actually lessen when you come here. I will also advise them, if they can to know the language of the country that they are going to. For example, if they are coming to Turkey, if they practice and learn Turkish before coming it will be very very helpful for the students to easily mingle with the society and in order for them to finish any activities or interactions in the country. I will advise all of the international students that want to come to Turkey also to know different languages; especially English and any other languages. Because the more languages you know, the better your chances to get here in Turkey. And also, when I came, I was also thinking that there will not be many international students that I will meet. But actually, I saw that there are a lot of international students from many different countries, including my own country. That’s here, which made it easier for me to get adapted to the country, and that is one of the many reasons that took my worry away when I first came to Turkey. I wish all success to all of the international students and all of the students here in Turkey and to anyone who wants to come to Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. You should not hesitate to and you will be very welcomed here.
