Department of Sport Sciences

Hi, I'm Yağmur Demirel. I am a senior student at the Department of Sports Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. I also play volleyball. I'm part of the university team. The Department of Sport Sciences at the Etlik National Will Campus provides both theoretical and practical sports education as a comprehensive understanding of physical education and sports within the boundaries of universal science. It aims to establish a scientific approach with the implementation of the theoretical knowledge in laboratories and within the application areas when necessary. Generally, in addition to the compulsory basic courses in the branches of Gymnastics, Athletics, Football, Basketball, Swimming, and handball, there are also elective courses. In addition, from the physiological foundations of sports to its sociological effects, as a sports scientist, we get theoretical courses that will meet our needs for our professional life. In terms of laboratories and workshops, in addition to 2 multi-purpose indoor sports halls where the department conducts lessons and activities, we have 5 studio halls including a fitness center. In addition, there is a laboratory for the measurement of sports performance, which is used for conducting scientific research and reinforcing theoretical courses. While having the opportunity to observe the reflections of the theoretical information we learned, within the sector thanks to the compulsory field application in our curriculum in the form of an internship and graduation projects, we prepare ourselves for master’s education that our graduates are interested in by completing the compulsory research project. In our department, there is an internship for the 4th year students as a final internship. We can do this internship in sports halls, in certain ministries and organizations. When we graduate from the Department of Sports Sciences, we gain the title of a sports scientist and have the opportunity to work in public and private sectors, in the Ministry of Education, in Sports Services at the General Directorate, in central and provincial organizations, sport federations, sports clubs, sportive performance and research centers, talent selection and development centers, physical fitness centers, sports training centers and municipalities. I chose this department in order to take advantage of the opportunities that would be possible thanks to its location and its small number of graduates. Why did I choose Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University? The fact that it is the first state university founded in Ankara about 50 years after the previous one founded, is an indication of the importance of our university's mission. I have chosen to participate in this mission in my own field. Among the facilities offered to me, the knowledge of the faculty members working in our department is our greatest advantage. It is very useful for us that they are available whenever we need their help. In addition, I can say that our current sports facilities are the most advantageous facilities in our area. After graduation, I want to continue my graduate education within our university and earn money by working in qualified companies in the sector with my undergraduate degree. My advice to the candidates who will choose our university and department is that carefully evaluate differences between the Department of Sports Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences while making your choice.
