International Ottoman Studies
Hello my name is Zahit ATÇIL. I’m an associate prof at istanbul medeniyet university. I am head of international ottoman studies graduate studies program. I received my graduate degree at the university of Chicago. I work on early modern ottoman history. Our graduate program offers MA and PHD degrees. Our program is particularly designed for international students, coming from different countries. Especially does who are interested in ottoman history should apply and come to our program, they can pursue an MA and PHD degrees. We also welcome Turkish students who are eloquent in English. We provide our courses in English. We ask students to provide proof of proficiency in English, and also a certificate of ALES. But international students are exempt from providing ales, but need to provide English and Turkish language proficiency. Luckily we have distinguished faculty members who have received their education in internationally renowned institutions. We have diversity in regional focus, and subject variation, and particularly we have our faculty members who focused on different periods of ottoman history. We offer a variety of courses, particularly we offer courses in ottoman history, diplomatic history, economic history. Also we provide courses on literature, pihlosophy, and also ottoman law. We also provide courses focusing on different parts of ottoman history. İnternational students can apply for Turkish scholarship programs, this is supported by the Turkish government.
We also provide full support to our students in terms of their academic achievements, and also their progress in their academic career. We invite them to discuss with the esteemed faculty members and also other graduate students their research and contributions to the field. For ottoman studies, arvhives and manuscript libraries are very critical for research. We introduce our students to arvhives and manuscript libraries. We make several tours to many different sites in Istanbul. We provide opportunities to graduate students, to discuss their research with faculty members. We invite renowned scholars to bring their newly up to date research to share their findings with our graduate students. We have the largest in campus library in turkey. This is one of the great opportunities for someone who studying ottoman history. They should come and meet the distinguished faculty members, and see the library. And also we provide our graduate students the access to archival materials that are available to our faculty members. Our graduate members may apply for the ERASMUS program, for research and training, and also for internships. They can visit different countries that we have partnerships with. Various countries in Europe and the world. Our students can apply for a Turkish scholarship, provided by the Turkish government. This is expecially designed for international students. We have students coming from former Ottoman territories. We welcome them to study Ottoman history at our department. Firstly, we hav excellence in education. We have a diverse faculty staff. We have a great academic staff, many hailing from mostly international universities. This is what makes our department the best in terms of Ottoman Studies in Turkey. We ask international students to provide proof of proficiency both in English and in Turkish. And there will be excempt from the ALES test that is required for Turkish students.
