Field Crops

Hello, I am Professor Ismet Baser. I am one of the first faculty students to graduate from Namik Kemal University Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Field Crops in 1986. I stayed at this faculty and completed my master's and doctoral studies and became a professor in 2007. I am currently the Head of the Department of Cereals and Edible Grain Legumes. Tekirdag Namık Kemal University Faculty of Agriculture was founded in 1982 and is a 40-year-old faculty. One of the 4 founding departments of the faculty is our department. Since then, the Field Crops department has continued to provide education in this faculty. We provide students with the necessary 4-year undergraduate education on field crops, a 2-year master's degree after undergraduate education and a doctorate education of 4 to 6 years. There are 3 departments in our faculty. The first is cereals and edible legumes, which I am also the head of. Another is our department of industrial plants and meadow-pasture forage plants. In our faculty, there are 3 professors, 1 associate professor in the Department of Cereals and Edible Grain Legumes, 3 professors, 1 doctor assistant, 1 assistant in the department of industrial plants, 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 doctor assistant and 1 assistant faculty member in the meadow pasture fodder plants department. Courses are given on plant ecology, plant physiology, plant cultivation, plant breeding, seeding, organic agriculture, medicinal plants and planning of trials. There are 6 laboratories belonging to our department. We also have a seed processing warehouse. In these laboratories, plant breeding, especially molecular biotechnological analyses, seed analysis and plant analysis are carried out. In our department, 2 internships are required, unlike other departments. The first is an internship in the 2nd grade called an in-department internship. This internship lasts approximately 20 working days and our students have to do this in the department to learn more about what the faculty is all about. In addition, an internship lasting 30 working days is carried out in the 3rd grade. In this internship, students can go to seed companies and external units such as pharmaceutical companies if they want, or if they do not want to, they can do their internships in our faculty and department. With Erasmus, our students have the opportunity to go to countries such as Germany, Poland, Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Spain and study there for 1 or 2 semesters. They can also do their internships abroad with Erasmus. Our department continuously participates in the meetings of TAGEM (General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies), faculty members participate in the meetings of BISAB (Sub-Union of Plant Breeders), participate in the Field Crops Congresses held every two years and also organize it here when it is our turn. In addition, we offer our perspectives on different issues both in the local press and in the national press.
Our department is one of the departments with the widest business opportunities, especially in our region. Especially in state institutions and institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, TAGEM, agricultural provincial and district directorates, Soil Crops Office, agricultural chambers, etc.), our department students have high employment rates. In addition, they can work in private seed companies, which in recent years have been the most popular fields. They can start their own businesses. They start working in many different places such as Agricultural Credit Cooperatives. The world is going through a global climate change. There's a lot of climatic change. Therefore, the importance of agriculture is really increasing day by day. Especially today, sustainable agriculture is one of the most important issues. I can simply say that the importance of agriculture is increasing day by day. Therefore, students who choose this department should love this profession. That's one of the most important factors of success. If they come to this faculty loving this profession and are equipped, I can say that they will be successful and will be satisfied with this job. Our university is a university established close to the city. For this reason, there is accommodation and places where students can engage in sporting activities around our university. In addition, as the Faculty of Agriculture, the presence of our test areas on campus is an important advantage for these students. If they need to, they can reach the city at any time. There are opportunities to do all kinds of cultural activities within the university. Our university is located close to the city center. Therefore, our students can easily benefit from the facilities of our university. They can easily go to the city center to take advantage of all kinds of facilities. There are edifices within our university that will meet almost all the needs of our students. As for the faculty of agriculture, especially the fact that all of the laboratories of the faculty of agriculture are within the trial fields, allows students to benefit from these areas very easily and use them effectively. Tekirdag Namık Kemal University Faculty of Agriculture is a faculty established about 40 years ago. The fact that all the test fields, laboratories, climate rooms and greenhouses are located in the same university campus in this faculty will provide a great opportunity for the students who will come here to both study and benefit from it. On the hand, thanks the fact that the faculty is in the center of the campus, provides comfort both in terms of accommodation and access to cultural activities. Our university, and especially the Faculty of Agriculture, is one of the leading faculties of agriculture in Turkey. We have 9 varieties that have been in use in our department. I can say that these are the faculties that are at the forefront or even in the first place in this regard in Turkey. That's why I think students are going to come to a good faculty, a good department.
