Opticianry

I am Doctor Yunus Karabela, a doctoral lecturer. I graduated from Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine in 1994. I started training in eye diseases in 1996. Since 2000, I have worked as an ophthalmologist and academician in private sector, public and foundation hospitals in Istanbul. Since 2017, I have been working as a doctor lecturer in Hamidiye Vocational School of Health Services, Department of Medical Services and Techniques, Optician Program. I am the Opticians program manager. The main goal of our program, which was established within our university, is to train health technicians, focusing on optics. Opticians serve as auxiliary health personnel who undertake important duties in terms of public health and preventive health services. The main duties of opticians are to supply, select, sell and apply eyeglass lenses for patients, and also optical tools and equipment prescribed by ophthalmologists. In our program, courses in the field of basic health are provided for opticians who are trained as health technicians. We offer courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology. There are also courses in the field of mathematics and science. These are courses such as Basic Physics, Basic Mathematics, Physics and Geometric Optics. In our program, both applied and theoretical courses in optics are provided. Within our program, there is one highly equipped optician's laboratory prepared to meet all the needs of the program. This laboratory is organized in such a way that around 20-25 students can receive practical training at the same time.
Students of the Optician Program are required to complete a compulsory 20-day summer internship in order to complete their program. They fulfill these compulsory summer internship applications in private optician institutions and scientific optician institutions. Graduate students, unlike other health technicians, can work in eye clinics as an assistant to ophthalmologists, especially in the private sector, in factories that produce semi-finished glass, and frame production. The main working areas of the graduates of the program are optician companies as responsible managers or opticians. They can legally work in all places in which their training legally allows. This procession is quite prestigious. Since it is a profession carried out only by individuals who have the title of scientific optician in the field, individuals who will do this job must have an associate degree in Optics. For this reason, Optician Associate Degree Programs can be chosen because it is a field that focuses on public health and health services, and prestigious field at that. University of Health Sciences is one of the largest health universities in the world. It is a university that provides health services and health education both in the country and abroad. At the same time, it is a university that cooperates with the Ministry of Health. For this reason, I recommend students to choose our university. I wish success to students who will take the university exams. After the exam, I recommend them to make their choices in line with the professions they want to do. I’d like to state that they can receive education in all fields of our university, such as optics, and that the doors of our university are open to them.
