Rector Speech 2
We have 3500 graduate students at our university. We offer postgraduate and doctoral education. Every day we are increasing the number of departments that provide doctoral education. We have many graduate students coming from the Thrace region and other various parts of our country. Our mission requires us to ascribe importance to the recruitment of postgraduate students especially from the Balkan regions for which we open special quotas.
We are opening special quotas for this region. We have many graduates, as I said, a large number of students, approximately 3500. We have 5 institutes. Our Institute of Social Sciences is very resourceful. We have the Institute of Sciences. We have the Institute of Health Sciences.
Apart from these, we have the Institute of Roman Language and Culture Studies and the Balkan Research Institute, the only of their kinds in Turkey. They also carry out special studies on their subjects and do conduct postgraduate work. As I said, our university has completed its 40-year maturity period, and we are building new necessary departments. Our university aims at quality rather than quantity.
Our goal is to become a university that achieves greater success with larger projects, a university that makes progress in quality, rather than simply expanding. That is why there won't be many new faculties. Instead, we are moving further in line with a strategy that focuses on strengthening current institutions.
We are a well-established institution. We care about the personnel we train, and we want them to bring the best of their contributions to our institution. Of course, we determine this in line with their academic development. A doctoral lecturer first becomes an associate professor and then a professor, in line with their individual professional maturity. Our university has gradually developed its staff to associate professor and professor levels. We also recruit academics who are experts in many fields. In the last 4-5 years, we have brought in more than 300 new academicians to our institution. Of course, we recruit our faculty members according to the criteria of the Council of Higher Education. Our admission criteria are also above those of many universities. We also use our own criteria that are not available in different universities, such as having certain publications and language requirements. Our end goal is to have trained academics who in turn transfer their experience and raise competent new generations. We have a great and dynamics staff. As I have already mentioned, we are in the process of continually building a university that will achieve significant breakthroughs, earn great awards and set forth inventions that will change the fate of the country. We have now started our second term, the fifth year of my rectorship. Quality studies were very new when we first started. One of our departments – the biology department – was making an effort. Together with us, the Biology Department received accreditation. During this period that lasted approximately four and a half years, 18 units of our university were accredited.
For example, the Faculty of Medicine is internationally accredited, Foreign Languages Education has Pearson accreditation, all units of the Faculty of Science are accredited, and 8 of the clinical units within the Faculty of Medicine are accredited. We announced a quality mobilization throughout the university and particularly encouraged institutions in accreditation. For example, 6 units of our Faculty of Education are accredited. And now the Faculty of Architecture applied, together with the the Faculty of Pharmacy the Faculty of Engineering. In other words, we are after a vision in which our university has accreditations that are possible to receive within the two-year period. As you know, the Higher Education Quality Board (YÖKAK) was established independently of the Higher Education Council (YÖK)
and is doing very important work in terms of improving the quality of universities. They closely follow our university’s work. We also undergo inspections and evaluations. Here, it was documented that our university proved to be quite successful. Evaluation conducted three years ago were compared to this year’s evaluation. Also, I would accept it as the team head of the Higher Education Quality Board. In other words, I also take part in the quality evaluations of other universities. I must say that our university has made an important attack on this issue, a great awareness has been raised in almost all of the institution, quality representatives are working in every department, and the institution is well evaluated with risk workshops. We are trying to establish a system that will move this institution further every day by setting up a self-healing, self-renewing, and self-solving system. We have come a long way and I hope it that we will go even further. It has its advantages. Our students are already subject to the Bologna processes, they already receive a blue diploma. However, when they graduate, we also present them with a certificate of graduation from an internationally accredited educational institution. Wherever they go in the world, this document proves that they have received quality and sufficient education. Hopefully this work will continue. As for now, we applied to the Higher Education Quality Board (YÖKAK) as a university, not as a department or program, but as a whole university. Our hope is to receive total accreditation for our institution.
