Food Engineering

I am Professor Zeynep Katnaş, the Founding Head of the Department of Food Engineering at Trakya University. Our department was established in 2008. Our department is a department that deals with all aspects of Food Engineering. The food industry is a division of food organized according to the "from farm to fork" principle. Our responsibility covers the whole process beginning with the raw materials coming from the field, continuing with their processing and ending when the finished product is put on the eating table. Therefore, distribution of products is also involved in our line of work. The storage sector during distribution is very important to us. Zero waste is a high-tech industry. Contrary to popular belief, the courses offered at our department are focused on engineering. The building blocks of zero waste and sustainable industry include subjects such as Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer and Kinetics. There are 3 laboratories in our department. One of them focuses on Food Analysis, the other on Process Applications and the final one focuses on Microbiology Applications. We also have one research laboratory. However, the Research laboratory is only used by undergraduate students in the research course. It is the field where mostly graduate and doctoral students do their studies. Graduation projects are generally carried out to support graduate students' thesis work. We have two compulsory internships. One of them must be in the field of management. Our students can benefit from the Erasmus program, and we tend to continuously improve these opportunities. We are investigating the possibilities of making more agreements with different universities. The Erasmus exam is a competitive exam at the university. Therefore, there are many Erasmus students among the students who have passed their English proficiency. There are also Erasmus internship opportunities. We have a national congress we organize on behalf of the Food Technology Association. In addition, we take effort to send our graduate students to various national and international events. Our graduates have a wide field of professional opportunities. We can say that it begins with catering and business management, continues with distribution companies, and ends in research and development centers. Our biggest advice to our prospective students is to improve their English skills, and to develop their skills in mathematics and analytical thinking. Trakya University has a wide range of dormitories, especially for female students. Apart from Trakya University, there are many private dormitories. In addition, the people of Edirne are used to students. They know very well how to interact and treat them. It is also a safe city for students. We wish you success in your exams.
