Sultan II. Bayezid Complex Health Museum

Hello, I'm Lecturer Ruhi Pehlivancık. I am the director of the Sultan Bayezid II Complex Health Museum operating under Trakya University. The story of this place begins with the conclusion of the correspondence between the Regional Directorate of Foundations and Trakya University in 1985, and the transfer of all units of the Sultan Bayezid Complex to Trakya University, except for the mosque. We know that after the Sultan Bayezid II Complex was allocated to Trakya University in 1985, the relevant departments offered classes here for about 13 years, and students were trained in fields such as restoration and architecture. Having said that, the opening of our first museum coincides with the year 1998. We opened our first museum in 1998 once we designed the part of the complex we call the Darüşşifa, with the concept of living museum, in a manner conforming with its original form. About 9 years later, in 2007, our madrasa section, that is, the section, known as "Medresetül Etibba", where medical education was given at the time, has been designed with the concept of a living museum in accordance with its original and its spirit, after which it has been showcased. The last museum opened in our complex is the Imaret Museum, in which you currently stand, and we activated this place in September 2020. Again, this place is in accordance with the original, in accordance with its spirit; It is a museum where the employees of that period and the conditions of that period are endeavoured to be conveyed to the visitors. The story of the complex begins about 120 years after the conquest of Edirne, when the people of Edirne demanded a hospital from the Sultan, since there was no hospital that treated according to Islamic methods. After Sultan Bayezid II laid the foundation stone of this place with his own hands in 1484, he sets out to conquer the Kili and Akkerman Castles, which are located within the borders of Odessa, Ukraine today. This complex is built only with Sultan's portion from the loot of this expedition, which was completed in the summer of 1484. And in the next period, all services such as education, health, accommodation, food and beverage, worship are offered free of charge. The financing of this place was provided by the revenues of the income sources of the surrounding principalities, villages, workplaces and baths, which were in the Sultan's possession. Today, the Sultan Bayezid II Complex, as we have just mentioned, is not only a museum operating under Trakya University, but also an educational institution. Today, Trakya University Faculty of Medicine students hold their first lessons every year at the Sultan Second Bayezid Complex Health Museum. In addition, Sultan Bayezid II Complex Health Museum hosts various artistic and cultural organizations every year. Further, Sultan Beyazıt Complex Health Museum organizes many social events every year, from artistic concerts to exhibitions, from symposiums to meetings. At the same time, as it is a hospital-oriented complex, Sultan Bayezid II Complex is the only example to be found in the world and therefore our candidacy process in the UNESCO Temporary Heritage List is on the way to the Permanent Heritage List.
