Private Law
I am Professor Sezer ÇABRİ, a lecturer in the Private Law Department at the Graduate Education Institute of Istanbul Medeniyet University, specializing in Civil Law. Our Private Law Department offers a diverse range of programs, including the Doctorate in Private Law, Master's Degree in Private Law with Thesis, English Master's Degree in Private Law, IT Law, and Master's Degree in Private Law without Thesis. We aim to provide various options to cater to our students' interests and goals. Students can choose to pursue a thesis-based master's degree in Turkish or English, or opt for a specialized master's program in IT law.
Applicants interested in specializing in the field of law can apply to any of our programs. The primary objective of these programs is to enable students to develop expertise in the field of law. The application and graduation requirements vary depending on the program. To apply for the Doctorate in Private Law, a minimum score of 70 in ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) and 60 points in the foreign language exam are required. A ranking is then determined based on the average scores of eligible students, and candidates are admitted accordingly. For the Master's Degree programs, the application requirements are a minimum score of 70 in ALES and 60 points in the foreign language exam. Students are admitted based on their scores, from highest to lowest, within the program's quota. It is essential to hold a law degree to be eligible for our graduate programs. Those without a law degree cannot apply. Graduation requirements vary for each program. For the Doctorate in Private Law, students must complete the required number of courses during the one-year course phase. They must also pass the proficiency exam and successfully defend their doctoral thesis, accumulating a total of 260 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits to meet graduation requirements. In the Master's Degree programs with thesis, students complete a one-year course phase and must successfully defend their thesis to graduate. The thesis is the primary requirement for graduation in this program and should be prepared and defended under the guidance of an advisor. In the non-thesis Master's Degree program, students need to demonstrate success in the course phase and complete an end-of-term project to fulfill graduation requirements.
The Private Law Department comprises 6 professors, 5 associate professors, 17 assistant professors, and a total of 28 academic staff members. Many of our faculty members have obtained their master's and doctoral degrees abroad and are experts in their respective fields. This provides our students with the opportunity to write a thesis in their desired field, under the guidance of their preferred faculty member. Our program offers a wide range of courses, allowing students to make choices aligned with their interests. We maintain a course pool that is regularly updated with the addition of new courses recommended by our field experts. At the beginning of each semester, all courses available in the pool are offered as elective options to our students. They have the freedom to select courses that align with their areas of study and personal interests. All courses with sufficient student enrollment are opened and made available to students.
