Molecular Biology and Genetics
Hello, I'm Ömer Faruk SARIOĞLU, an instructor at the Molecular Biology and Genetics Program in Istanbul Medeniyet University. Our master's program in Molecular Biology and Genetics with a thesis is open to graduates of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology, Medical Biology and Genetics, and similar fields. The program aims to train highly competent and well-equipped students who can conduct internationally recognized research in various fields of bioengineering. Prospective applicants must have completed a 4-year undergraduate program in Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biology, Medical Biology and Genetics, or related disciplines. Additionally, they need to achieve a minimum score of 70 in the ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education) exam and a minimum score of 75 in exams such as YÖKDİL (Higher Education Institutions Foreign Language Exam) or YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) to demonstrate foreign language proficiency.
To graduate from the program, students are required to successfully complete a minimum of 9 departmental courses, including the seminar course, and accumulate 120 ECTS (European Credit Collection and Transfer System) credits. The Molecular Biology and Genetics master's program offers a diverse range of courses that build upon the undergraduate program in the same field. Furthermore, interdisciplinary education opportunities are provided through courses in industrial biotechnology and drug release technologies.
Prior to starting the program, students establish contact with experts in their desired research areas and are promptly directed to professors who specialize in those fields. Subsequently, students have the opportunity to communicate with the professors they wish to work with and express their interest in collaborating. Following the selection of the most suitable advisor, students choose their advisor and continue their education in the relevant field and projects.
We encourage students to participate in national and international congresses, symposiums, and other academic events to support their academic growth. Projects offer incentives for such activities, and students receive the necessary support to engage in these projects and events. Moreover, we guide students practically to develop their independent experimental skills, providing them with the necessary guidance to conduct their own experiments. We create a supportive environment for them to document their experiments, prepare reports, and write project reports.
Our university's Ziraat Bank Library, located on the North Campus, is a vast and continuously updated resource. It offers an extensive collection of print and digital books that our students can utilize for research purposes. Additionally, the laboratories in BİLTAM (Science and Advanced Technology Application and Research Center) are well-equipped, providing excellent working opportunities. Furthermore, when needed, we collaborate with other universities to access additional facilities through outsourcing services, ensuring our students have access to a wide range of resources and opportunities.
Our university offers ERASMUS and Farabi exchange programs, and individuals interested in obtaining detailed information can inquire at the relevant units. We also encourage and support candidates who are eligible to receive scholarships from TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey) Scientist Support Programs Presidency (BIDEB). Additionally, those who are not TÜBİTAK BİDEB scholarship holders can participate in ongoing projects led by our professors through TÜBİTAK ARDEB (Research Support Programs Presidency) scholarships. One distinguishing feature of our program is that it is conducted entirely in English. Located in Istanbul, our program fosters collaborations with other universities in the city and benefits from the ongoing partnerships established by our professors. Our teaching staff, composed of young, dynamic, and hardworking individuals, consistently engages in research and generates innovative projects, setting our department apart. Applicants to our program from the Turkish quota of foreign students must hold a degree from a recognized university or high school, equivalent to a four-year program according to the evaluation of YÖK (Higher Education Institution). These candidates are not required to fulfill a language proficiency requirement such as the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Similarly, Turkish students are not subject to specific qualification and graduation grade requirements, as determined by the ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam).Upon graduation, we provide continuous support and monitoring for our alumni, assisting them in becoming industry or academia references at their desired positions when they deem it necessary. Furthermore, for those interested in pursuing academic careers, our department, though not yet established, has plans to offer a doctoral program in the near future, while also encouraging students to consider doctoral programs at other universities. Our program opens up employment opportunities in various fields, including pharmaceutical companies, laboratory companies, medical device companies, forensic medicine, hospital laboratories, and software companies operating in the field of medicine and health sciences. Candidates can choose to pursue industry positions aligned with their interests and work on diverse subjects in different fields. With our young and proactive faculty members consistently striving for improvement, our department stands as the most active within our university, generating a multitude of projects. Furthermore, being situated in Istanbul and fostering collaborations with diverse institutions and universities in the city provides an excellent opportunity for our students. We extend our best wishes to all exam takers and encourage those who meet the qualification requirements and possess a genuine interest to apply to Istanbul Medeniyet University's Molecular Biology and Genetics Master's Program with Thesis.
