History of Art

Hello, I'm Elif Melike Ayyıldız. I am a 4th year student at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Art History. Our department is located in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Taşlıçiftlik Campus of our university. It was established in 2003 and has started to accept students since 2010. The main purpose of our department is to train researchers who know of art history and preserve works of art. In our department, optional English language education is provided in the preparatory class. Starting from the first grade, our courses continue in a chronological order. In the first year, courses that form the basis of our field such as Introduction to Art History, Ottoman Turkish, Art History Methodology, Technical Drawing and Surveying are given. Starting from 2nd year and onwards, courses on painting, sculpture, and handicrafts focused on Turkish-Islamic arts and Byzantine Art, Western art and modern arts are provided. We expand our theoretical knowledge about the Middle Ages by participating in the archaeological excavations carried out by our teachers in or outside of Tokat. In our department, we aim to expand our scientific knowledge by carrying out thesis studies. In addition, although there is no obligation to carry out an internship, we can find internship opportunities in museums, Provincial Directorates of Culture and municipalities. When we graduate, we can find job opportunities in the public sector, in museums under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in the General Directorate of Foundations, the General Directorate of Highways, the Ministry of National Education and municipalities. In the private sector, we can work in private museums and art galleries together with restoration and architecture companies. I chose this department because of my interest in historical artifacts and art. I chose Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University because of Tokat’s historical heritage, and also for our university’s young and dynamic staff, in addition to the benefits offered to students. After I graduate, I want to pursue graduate education and work in the academy. Our department professors help us out in many different ways. When you come to our department, you can benefit from all kinds of opportunities. Tokat, where our university is located, is a safe city. I can say that social facilities are increasing day by day. Tokat is a city with a rich historical heritage. Thanks to this, we apply the theoretical knowledge we learned in the classroom in the field. You can also take advantage of all these opportunities.
