Major of Smart Systems Engineering
My name is Murat Erten, I am the head of department for Smart Systems. Smart Systems Master's Programme is a master's programme with a thesis organised under the Graduate Education Institute. The programme includes several branches of science, one of which is Applied Mathematics and Computational Science, another one is Smart and Innovative Materials, and another one is Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. We continue our education in these three fields with the support of faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering and other departments. One of our compulsory courses is Mathematical Modelling and Applications in Smart Systems. Additionally, students can choose 3 elective courses each semester. They complete all their courses in the first two semesters and work on their thesis in the following two semesters. As I have mentioned, since this is an interdisciplinary department, they can work on fields related to different areas of engineering or fundamental sciences such as in the field of Materials, in the field of Computer Engineering or in the field of Electronics Engineering in their thesis. Smart Systems Engineering master's programme is offered in very few universities in Turkey. It is also offered in very few universities abroad as well. That is one of the reasons it is very important for us and another important factor is that our students can work on many different fields in their thesis among interdisciplinary studies. We hope that many scientific publications can be made, and many scientific projects can be carried out, and consequently we can reap the fruits of this work as a whole university. Smart Systems programme is an interdisciplinary one. For this reason, all our faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering take part in this programme and they have the chance to open a number of courses, which is something that makes us really happy. We can contribute to smart systems programme when everyone offers courses in their area of speciality, and also, we can offer a wide range of courses for our students.
When selecting students for the Smart Systems Engineering Master's Programme, we usually favour those with a foundation in engineering, mathematics or statistics. However, we can also accept students coming from different disciplines with the decision of our department based on the education they have received and the contents of their courses. We believe that the students who complete the Smart Systems Master's programme will have the opportunity to pursue doctorate studies in various fields. And by pursuing their studies, they will have the opportunity to find employment in any field that they want; be it material where they can work in factories specialising on certain materials or in the field of computer engineering, in the field of computer engineering in various companies or in the field of fundamental sciences. We have plans to have doctorate studies as well within the scope of the Department of Smart Systems Engineering. And once we set up our doctorate studies, we can include our own graduates of undergraduate or master's programmes as well as people who completed their master's degrees in other universities. We believe that work to be done in this scope can make more contributions to the scientific studies. Both our faculty members and our students will get more benefits from it. Today, the various alternatives offered by the Smart Systems Engineering provide good opportunities for our students to learn about the latest technologies. Therefore, we want to encourage our students to be a part of the Smart Systems Engineering Master's Programme. We would be happy to see them with us. We also believe they will also get the utmost benefit from it. We would like to express that we would be really happy to welcome students who have graduated from various disciplines both in the master's programme with thesis within the body of the Department of Smart Systems Engineering as well as the doctorate programme we are planning to start in the future.
