Major of Economy
I'm Sacit Hadi Akdede. I am professor and head of department in the Department of Economics. I am also the Head of the Branch of Economics. The main part of our education is a new program of Economics in English with Thesis. In our department, candidates who are going to graduate from the Department of Economics must have a certain English score. Although our undergraduate education is in Turkish, we provide the master's education in English because we wanted to be effective in foreign applications as well. In our graduate program, besides the main courses of economics, there are courses that focus on Political Economy, Cultural Economy and Applied Econometrics. In our master's program, we offer the main courses of economics and optional courses according to the expertise of our faculty members. Courses such as Educational Economics, Econometrics, Applied Econometrics, Cultural Econometrics are offered as expertise courses. Our department is still very new. Although it is new, our department will actively take part in international studies and workshops due to our international connections. We are planning to organize the European Cultural Economy Workshop in our department in the coming days. Our department does not only have economics graduates. Graduates of the Faculty of Mathematics, Statistics and Engineering can also apply. Not just them, but also graduates of the History Department can also apply if they want to. Students from other departments can come to our department after taking a few courses before completing their undergraduate program with a short orientation process. We strive to provide a highly diverse platform for students. Students with a History or Engineering background can also apply. We think this will enrich the department and bring different perspectives. Our course programs are built accordingly.
In the upcoming period, we are planning to open a Master's Degree program in Cultural Economy without Thesis as a graduate program in the Department of Economics. Because İzmir is known as a city of culture, we think there is such a potential in Izmir. We think there is a gap in this regard. We believe that those working in both public institutions, museums and municipalities in Izmir will be interested in such a program. The Master of Cultural Economics without Thesis will be initiated in the coming days. My suggestion to students who want to be a student in our department or to pursue a master's degree is to improve their English because the language of education in the department is English. We want them to come to the program with a good command of English because our lessons, books, resources are in English. Apart from that, it will be enough for them to love economics. It doesn't matter what undergraduate degree they studied. The important thing is that they want to do a master's degree in economics and apply to our department with a command English. I recommend students who will come to our department to study hard by benefiting from the opportunities of Izmir and benefiting from the rich backgrounds of the faculty members at the school. I’ll repeat it again, please develop your English language skills. I wish them success.
