Department of Geography Education

Hello, I am Prof. Dr. Şermin TAĞIL. I am the head of the Department of Geography, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Izmir Bakırçay University. I received my bachelor's and master's degrees from Ege University, Faculty of Letters. I received my PhD degree from Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Department of Geography. I am a faculty member in the Department of Physical Geography. I generally work on geographic information systems and remote sensing.There are two programs in our geography department under the Graduate Education Institute of Izmir Bakırçay University. One of them is a master's program in geography with thesis. The other one is geographic information systems remote sensing non-thesis master's program. Both of our programs are given at Izmir Bakırçay University Seyrek Campus. We have two programs under the Department of Geography. Under our geography master's program with thesis, we focus on the deepening of our students, especially our geography department graduates. We have a wide range of courses where they can make sense of space and develop their projects. Our courses are in two subgroups. One of them is the human geography subgroup and the other is the physical geography subgroup. Our students choose the courses under this group if they will be oriented towards physical geography, and the courses under human geography if they will be oriented towards human geography. Our students can also choose courses from different fields within the scope of our university. In addition, we also offer the opportunity to choose courses from different programs. The aim of our non-thesis master's program in geographic information systems and remote sensing is to train students for the sector. For this reason, we have many applied courses. Some of these courses focus on database, another group on remote sensing, and the other group on geographic information systems to make different spatial analyzes. Again, our program consists of an elective course group. Our students can choose their own courses depending on their needs. Although our students can choose 4 courses each year, we offer many courses to our students.We use the laboratories of the Department of Geography as part of our Graduate School. We have two laboratories. One is the earth sciences laboratory. In earth sciences laboratories, our students have the opportunity to perform different soil and geological analyzes. The other one is the laboratories on geographical information systems and remote sensing. There are different computer laboratories in our university. These are offered to students as geographic information systems and remote sensing laboratories. In these laboratories, our students can develop their analyses and projects by using different programs allocated to our university.Since we take into account that our students who graduate from our programs under our graduate education institute, our students who graduate from geography are generally academicians and deepen in their fields, our students generally prepare themselves for academics. Apart from this, they can also fulfill their teaching duties. Our students who graduate from our geographic information systems and remote sensing non-thesis master's program are trained to have the opportunities and equipment to work in every part of the sector. Therefore, our students are equipped to perform geographic information systems and remote sensing analysis in different units of municipalities, local governments and public institutions and organizations. Our university is a very new university in Izmir. Therefore, our department is also a very new department. While establishing our department, we also considered the needs in Izmir. For this reason, you can see a lot of courses on geographic information systems and remote sensing in our programs. Our students who take courses from these programs can also find the opportunity to work in Izmir. Therefore, they can both do their master's degree and meet their own opportunities by working. Our laboratories are very large in our university. Therefore, students of our geographical information systems and remote sensing program can benefit from these laboratories. Our faculty members are very broad and very dynamic. Therefore, since our faculty members are abroad-oriented faculty members, we offer their experiences abroad to our students. These innovations we offer return to our students as an opportunity. In particular, our non-thesis master's program in geographic information systems and remote sensing is also among the priority programs in Izmir. We have two programs under Izmir Bakırçay University Graduate Education Institute. Both of our programs offer many course opportunities to our students. Since we offer a large number of elective courses, our students can also expand their interests. In our program, if a student has an expectation from us, if there is a course or an agreement, we can evaluate it with our team and offer this opportunity to them. Therefore, it is a dynamic program. It can be preferred for this. None of our courses are unchangeable. New courses are added to our program according to new expectations. This, of course, can be a reason for preference for our students.I recommend students who will choose our program to first examine our academic staff. There are faculty members in our academic staff in a very broad perspective. Since our faculty members are generally technical faculty members, we train our students in technical subjects in their theses and projects. For this reason, the fact that our students come by strengthening their technical infrastructure is of course an advantage for our program. Our university is a young and dynamic university. Our students who will enroll in our graduate program can benefit from these broad perspective opportunities of our university.
