Major of Sociology
Hello, dear friends. I'm Associate Professor Yüksel Yıldırım. I am a faculty member of the Sociology Division of Izmir Bakırçay University. I am also the vice-head of the division. Our Division formed its Master’s Degree program in the first year that its Bachelor Degree in Sociology was established. It has applied to open its Ph.D. program in its second year. Currently, our Master’s program with a thesis and Ph.D. program are continuing to give education. Our Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Sociology are offering areas of study such as the History of Sociology, Ottoman Social Structure, Sociology of Religion, Environmental Sociology, Social Theory, Sociology of Science, Sports Sociology and Sociology of Work in accordance with the academic specialties of our professors. In addition, if the academic interests of our Master’s and Ph.D. students coincide with the interests of our professors, Master’s with a thesis and Ph.D. studies can be conducted in other fields as well. The Council of Higher Education has standard criteria such as ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam), foreign language and GPA average, which must be followed when admitting students to Master’s and Ph.D. programs. It is anticipated that students who take the science exams in order to apply for a Master's degree have a solid background in science. In addition, that the students who are applying for a Ph.D. program have completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. Our science exams have been designed to measure and test this competency. Students who we think have the necessary aptitude in this field, who meet the required average scores and pass the threshold will be granted admission to our programs. I don’t need to advise the candidates who will apply to our department for Master’s and Ph.D. studies to do a lot of reading. This is because, sociology and the Sociology Divison both require a highly developed academic aptitude and background. Postgraduate students are candidates to be scholars in the future. We hope that our students will take their place in the academy of Turkish sociology. First and foremost, I can say that although sociology is a science which originated in the West, the education we provide here is focused on building a Turkish sociology and the understanding of local sociology is dominant here. We advise the scholar candidates to embrace this understanding, and continue with their studies accordingly. The graduates of this division will be representatives of the ideas of native sociology and Turkish sociology, in Turkey. We kindly request them to be aware of this and to choose this division with this awareness. I would like to convey my best wishes to the students who will choose the Sociology Division. I would like them to know that, they will graduate with a solid background. I would also like them to know that they will encounter a warm, sincere and helpful approach when it comes to their counselor-student relationships along with their relationships with other teachers. The education we provide here is specifically to prepare them for a career in the faculty. I offer my love and respect to all of them.
