Department of History of Recent Era Master's Program with Thesis

Hello, I am Dr. Lecturer from Izmir Bakırçay University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History, Department of History of Recent Era. Member Demet KARASU. Founded on March 8, 2020, the Graduate School of Graduate Education included the Master's Program in the Department of History of Recent Era in the 2021 - 2022 academic year and started student recruitment. The language of instruction of our program, which is carried out as formal education, is Turkish, and our program is carried out by 2 professors, 4 doctoral faculty members and 2 research assistants. Our program consists of 2 years in total, i.e. 4 sections, 1 year of course period and 1 year of thesis period. In the first year of our program, our students will be responsible for 2 midterm and 2 final exams in total, 1 midterm and 1 final. In order to graduate from our program, our students must be successful in courses such as seminars, specialization courses, thesis management in the related courses during the course periods, and another condition for graduation is that the GPA must be 2.00 out of 4.00. If the thesis prepared at the end of our program is defended in front of the jury members and is successful, our students will be entitled to receive a master's degree.Our program has been established with the advantage of raising students who graduate from undergraduate programs as competent academicians in the world of science, looking at our students from the perspective of a healthy scientist both nationally and universally, completing the personal development of our students as well as their professional education, competent, based on ethical and moral rules, having moral values, leadership and management qualities, and becoming individuals who are not job seekers but job givers. The master's program in History of Recent Era is located in Izmir Bakırçay University, namely in our central campus in Seyrek Campus in Menemen District of Izmir Province. If we briefly talk about the courses given in our program; scientific research techniques and ethics, historical methodology, main sources of recent history, Ottoman bureaucracy, Turkish press history, 19th century Ottoman - Russian relations, 19th century Turkish world, and transcript and analysis of Ottoman archive documents, which are forgotten and are also important in terms of illuminating our past and history, are mostly related to the fields of recent history. Laboratories are not needed in the master's program of the Department of Modern History. Our university is mostly taught in classrooms and lecture halls. Within our program, after completing the course process for 1 year, our students move on to the thesis period in the 2nd year. In this period, our students are assigned a thesis topic related to the main discipline of contemporary history, taking into account the fields and skills that our students are interested in. Our students carry out their studies systematically with the advisor. As a result of the studies carried out, if our thesis is ready for defense, our students will be entitled to defend their thesis in the presence of the jury and if successful, they will be entitled to receive a diploma from the program of the Department of Modern History. Students who successfully graduate from the undergraduate program of the Department of Modern History can apply for positions as research assistants, lecturers or instructors within universities. In addition, they can also be employed by the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Directorate of Foundations, museum archives and the Ministry of National Education.First of all, Izmir Bakırçay University offers a quality, dynamic education with the slogan "A private state university". Of course, in addition to this, educational equivalence and diploma validity are provided in the member states of the European Union and many countries of the world. We also have facilities that host many social and cultural activities where our students can spend time outside of their education and training on campus. I would like to explain the transportation issue, which is a doubt in the minds of our students, especially those who may come from outside the province. Izmir Bakırçay University, located in the North Izmir Region, is in a very simple and very comfortable location in terms of transportation. Our students can choose Izmir Bakırçay University by taking transportation into consideration. In addition, although Izmir Bakırçay University entered from the lower middle regions in the rankings among state universities, it has managed to move itself upwards in a very short time and in direct proportion to this, the preferences made to the university are also increasing. Izmir Bakırçay University can be preferred both for its academic staff and for the different educational atmosphere, social and cultural activities it can offer to the youth of our country. As for my suggestions for students who will choose Izmir Bakırçay University Modern History Master's Program; first of all, they should be interested. Although history is an intimidating department, it is actually a program that will be very enjoyable as long as you are interested. I recommend our students to read sources related to the field of modern history and to take advantage of the many opportunities at our university. I wish success to the students who will take the university exam in advance.
