Department of Biology Education
Greetings, my friends! I'm Begum, a 4th-year student pursuing a degree in biology teaching. Currently, I am enrolled in the Biology Teaching Department at Balıkesir University's Necatibey Faculty of Education. The primary objective of our department is to train biology teachers specifically for high schools. Our curriculum emphasizes biology-focused courses, particularly within the field of biology.
In our field courses, we cover a range of subjects such as general biology, zoology, cytology, and histology. Additionally, we have laboratory classes available to us, where we engage in practical experiments and utilize resources such as microscopes, models, and specific materials tailored to each field. For instance, in our zoology laboratory classes, we study both vertebrate and invertebrate creatures using living examples.
Alongside our field courses, we also undertake formation courses, including educational psychology and educational sociology, which contribute to our overall teaching expertise. Our department boasts a biology laboratory equipped with necessary materials for conducting experiments and research.
Regarding internships, we participate in a two-semester program during the 7th and 8th semesters, which takes place in our final year of study. Each semester comprises approximately 14 weeks, during which we spend six hours per week observing and delivering lectures. After graduating from our department, many of us become biology teachers in high schools determined by the Ministry of National Education, typically through the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS). Moreover, there are opportunities to pursue master's and doctoral degrees, which can lead to roles as research assistants and academicians within the academic field.
My passion for living organisms and my childhood dream of becoming a teacher led me to choose this field of study. The long-standing history of Balıkesir University's Necatibey Faculty of Education, which spans 110 years, and the presence of a strong academic staff were influential factors in my decision. The laboratory conditions within our department significantly enhance our possibilities, as we have the privilege of working with living organisms directly.
Looking ahead, my post-graduation goals include actively participating in projects within non-governmental organizations and pursuing a master's degree to become a research assistant. If you decide to pursue this field, I encourage you to share the same passion for teaching and science. I believe it is essential to remain open-minded, constantly question, and engage in ongoing self-reflection. As the new generation of teachers, we are driven by curiosity, inquiry, and continuous learning. Therefore, if you possess a genuine passion for teaching and science, we extend a warm welcome to you at Balıkesir University's Necatibey Faculty of Education.
