Department of Mathematics Education

Hello, I am a student at Balıkesir University's Necatibey Faculty of Education, Department of Mathematics Education. I am in my 4th year of studies. My name is Zehra Selen DÖNMEZ. Our department provides a 4-year mathematics education program that is part of mathematics and science education. It is located in the Necatibey Faculty of Education, outside the Çağış Campus. It is one of the departments with the highest number of students in our faculty. Our quota is limited to 20 students and it is offered by only 13 universities in Turkey. We take common education courses, general culture courses, and mathematics related courses that are common to this faculty. The mathematics area courses focus on mathematics and mathematics education. Our mathematics courses cover the fundamentals of mathematics such as analysis, algebra, and geometry, while our mathematics education courses include the methods and techniques necessary for teaching mathematics. Our faculty has science and computer laboratories. Due to the skills required in the 21st-century and changing world conditions, we actively use computer laboratories. In the fall and spring semesters of the 4th year, as part of the Teaching Practice 1 and Teaching Practice 2 courses, we complete a total of 72 hours of internship in secondary education institutions determined by the Ministry of National Education, with 6 hours per week. Each semester, we conduct at least 4 hours of class teaching. Our assigned faculty member and the practicing teacher at the school listen to our presentations, observe us, and provide valuable feedback. We can work in secondary education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, as well as in private educational institutions. Additionally, by completing our master's degree, we have the opportunity to become academy members. It has been my dream to become a teacher since elementary school. Being able to teach people something and be helpful makes me very happy. I have a special interest in mathematics, which is why I chose the mathematics education department. Necatibey Faculty of Education is one of the first established education faculties at our university. It has graduated many important figures. In addition, the fact that it has a strong academic staff and is centrally located are among the reasons for choosing the university. We also have a prestigious position in the business world. First and foremost, we have a strong student-teacher communication. We can seek advice from our teachers on any subject and benefit from their experiences. In addition, we can attend seminars given by both our own professors and competent individuals from outside and obtain important certificates. My biggest goal is to educate individuals who are modern, innovative, committed to Atatürk's principles and reforms, and beneficial to their country. It is not enough to just love mathematics to choose this department. It also requires students who are aware of the value of the teaching profession and can fulfill the responsibilities it entails.
