Department of Midwifery
Hello! I am Deniz TURYAN, a fourth-year student at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Health Sciences, studying Midwifery. The primary goal of our department is to educate competent midwives who can serve the community, provide maternal and child health services, and care for mothers and babies throughout the entire perinatal period. We are encouraged to engage in research, critical thinking, and leadership to enhance our skills.
During the first year of the midwifery program, we study foundational subjects such as anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. In subsequent years, our focus shifts to obstetrics-related courses such as high-risk and normal childbirth, gynecology, maternal and child health, and mental health. Our faculty is equipped with laboratory and simulation classes where we practice using adult, pregnant, and child models. These classes allow us to gain hands-on experience in procedures like bloodletting, establishing vascular access, and simulated delivery scenarios.
Internships play a crucial role in our midwifery program. We have both compulsory internships during the summer break and practical internships during the academic term. The duration of these internships may vary, but the summer internships typically span around twenty days. After graduating, midwifery graduates have employment opportunities in various settings such as health centers, family health centers, public and private hospitals, and research institutions. Those interested in an academic career can pursue master's and doctoral degrees in the field.
My decision to pursue midwifery was influenced by my lifelong interest in the healthcare field and my desire to make a positive impact on people's lives. The profound nature of midwifery, being able to contribute to the miracle of childbirth, further solidified my choice. Balikesir University, being an established institution with a renowned midwifery school, a young and dynamic academic staff, and the advantageous opportunities provided by the city, was a natural choice for me.
During my time in the midwifery program, I have had the privilege to develop my professional skills through extensive laboratory and simulation practices. Our knowledgeable instructors have supported our growth, and the university library's resources have facilitated our research endeavors. After graduation, my plan is to serve in a public hospital, apply the knowledge and skills I have gained, pursue a master's degree, specialize as a midwife, and ultimately pursue an academic career.
For prospective students considering the midwifery department at Balıkesir University, I advise having a genuine passion for the field of healthcare, being self-confident, and displaying a willingness to learn. With the support of our instructors and the opportunities available at Balıkesir University, students can confidently choose the midwifery department. I wish success to all candidates taking the university exam, and we warmly welcome everyone to the Midwifery Department at Balıkesir University's Faculty of Health Sciences.
