Faculty of Architecture

Hello, I am Fatma Gül YILAN. I am a first-year student at Balıkesir University, Faculty of Architecture. We focus on the art of constructing buildings, combining functionality and aesthetic qualities to fulfill one of the basic needs of humans, which is shelter. The Department of Architecture is located in Çağış campus. Our courses are divided into theoretical and applied courses. In addition, we have courses that focus on the history of civilization. We first cover the theoretical subjecrs. For example, what is a staircase? What is a railing? What is flooring? What materials are used? We start by understanding these concepts. Then we move on to the applied part, which involves drawing a staircase, railing, and indicating the flooring. After these two courses, we become capable of drawing a staircase. The rest is left to our imagination. We have drawing studios for our classes. Additionally, we have computer labs for our computer-aided programs. We have all kinds of workshops to meet our needs. We have two types of internships. These internships are office internships and construction site internships. When we complete both internships which last for 30 days, we become eligible for graduation. After graduating from the Department of Architecture, I can work in offices or establish my own office. I have the authority to sign projects and can contribute to project management in construction sites. One of the reasons for choosing my department is that it is a much more social field compared to other departments, when studying and when working. Additionally, I love the relationship between people and space. I enjoy establishing a connection between the two and being creative, which is also required in this field. For example, in engineering, two plus two equals four. But in architecture, if it looks pleasing, it can be five. I find this space for creativity very appealing. Besides that, I believe that human life is of great importance. In our field, the fundamental goal is to construct solid buildings. My aim is to create buildings that are both structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing. That's why I chose the field of architecture. One of the reasons I chose Balıkesir University is its innovative and education-focused approach. Additionally, it is a university dedicated to educating students based on Atatürk's principles and reforms, and it meets international standards. Furthermore, the fact that the city is student-friendly, its proximity to the sea, and the competence of the academic staff played important roles in my decision to choose this university. While studying in the department, I feel that I benefit greatly from the experiences of my professors. I believe they provide us with excellent guidance in our courses and truly teach us to learn. Moreover, I frequently take advantage of the physical facilities offered by our faculty. One of my post-graduation goals, or perhaps the most important one, is to design truly solid and aesthetically intriguing buildings. I would like to tell students who are considering choosing the field of architecture: a challenging marathon awaits you. Never give up, and do everything on time. Once you lose control, it can be very difficult to regain it. Therefore, I recommend adopting a disciplined and organized approach to your work.
