Department of Elementary Mathematics Education
I am Fatma Yağmur ERTOP, currently in my third year of studies at Balıkesir University's Necatibey Faculty of Education. I completed my first year through online education, while the second and third years were conducted with face-to-face training.
The elementary mathematics teaching program is a four-year program within the mathematics education department, which falls under the mathematics and science department. It is located within the Necatibey Faculty of Education, outside the Çağış Campus.
Our curriculum consists of general culture courses, field knowledge courses, and vocational courses. The field courses cover a range of subjects, including mathematics history, fundamentals of mathematics, abstract algebra, abstract mathematics, and analysis. In our mathematics education courses, we focus on teaching methods and techniques, actively utilizing computer labs. Through courses such as teaching algebra and teaching geometry, we learn various programs and applications.
During the first and second semesters of our fourth year, we engage in internships at schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education, as part of our teaching practice course. Upon graduation, we can pursue careers in secondary schools and private schools under the Ministry of National Education, and also have the opportunity to work in science and art centers.
My decision to choose this department was influenced by multiple factors. Firstly, the university entrance exam score played a significant role. Additionally, the remarkable impact my secondary school teachers had on my life inspired me to pursue the teaching profession, as I believe I can make a positive difference in the lives of students.
Balıkesir University appealed to me because of the esteemed reputation of the Necatibey Faculty of Education, which prompted me to include it among my preferred choices. The university actively fosters a sense of community, with teachers offering various courses and opportunities. I have greatly benefited from these resources. Our professors exhibit understanding and patience, creating an environment that provides us with diverse opportunities for growth.
Following graduation, the next step typically involves the KPSS (Public Personnel Selection Examination) process, which is followed by the appointment process. In the future, I aspire to pursue a master's degree.
A career in math teaching requires a genuine love for both mathematics itself and the art of teaching. Teaching is a noble profession that demands patience and understanding. If you possess the ability to impact students' lives positively, teaching may be the right path for you.
I extend my best wishes to all those undertaking university entrance exams. We warmly welcome you to Balıkesir University.
