Department of Medical Microbiology

I am Professor Doctor Bengül Durmaz. I am a medical microbiologist. Yuksek Ihtisas University was established in 2015. The Faculty of Medicine was the first faculty to begin its teaching activities. It was followed by the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Vocational School of Health Services. Since 2015, we have been teaching medical microbiology to first, second and third years in the Faculty of Medicine. The Medical Microbiology Department has a total of 3 faculty members, including 2 professors and 1 doctor lecturer. Together, we teach general microbiology and medical microbiology in the Faculty of Medicine along with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Vocational School of Health Services. Medical microbiology is a field which has clinical laboratory applications. For this reason, we carry out clinical practice studies in the medical microbiology laboratories of our contracted hospitals and laboratories. This is how medical microbiology applications take place for both our undergraduate and graduate students. There is a science festival which is organized every year by the students of Yuksek Ihtisas University. We provide support to students who take part in the science festival and do projects in the field of microbiology. At the same time, we open our application laboratories where we support students’ projects and help them to bring these projects to fruition. It brings us joy to see our undergraduate students feel like they have achieved something special in the field of medical biology. They especially want to work in this field. Those who wish to develop themselves in the field of medical microbiology and would like to become medical microbiology specialists continue with their studies by either taking the Specialisation in Medicine Exam (TUS) which is held in Turkey nation-wide or by doing their Master’s or Ph.D. in our postgraduate institution. We accept students from both Specialisation in Medicine Exam (TUS) and the post graduate institute. We have the opportunity to give specialisations and also provide postgraduate education in Yuksek Ihtisas University hospitals. When our students first encounter the field of medical microbiology in their first year, they are a little scared. Because the names of all of our microorganisms are in Latin. However, they become very successful in medical microbiology in the following years with their accumulated knowledge. They successfully identify all the names of the microorganisms which have Latin roots along with their place in the medical literature. In their third year they enrich their fundamental medical knowledge with medical microbiology and then they move on to their clinical applications in their fourth and fifth years. Students solidify our lectures in the field of medical microbiology regarding the role that microorganisms play in diseases, the mechanisms of disease formation, and laboratory diagnosis methods with the internships they carry out. These internships are clinical internships, infectious diseases internships and other internships which are deemed to be necessary. Thus, they have much success during the course of their education and their professional medical career by providing a service which is both technically sound and well-versed. Since the aim of the Yuksek Ihtisas University is to train individuals in the health sector, especially health personnel, we attach great importance to this issue. In this regard, I wish all our students well in their professional lives. Yuksek Ihtisas University is located in the city center of Ankara. Therefore, being a city university is highly advantageous and valuable for our students. As soon as our students leave our university, they can immediately benefit from the social and cultural opportunities around them even during their breaks.
