Department of Histology and Embryology

I am Professor Doctor Emel Koptagel, the Head of the Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Medicine of Yuksek Ihtisas University. The Department of Histology and Embryology is a division under the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. We carry out our programme with 2 faculty members. In the first year of the Faculty of Medicine, there are histology and embryology courses in the cell and tissue course boards. In the cell lecture board, we look at the techniques applied in histology and embryology, as well as staining techniques, advanced techniques and right after we study microscopes, we work on the cell, cell components and cell divisions. When it comes to the tissue course board, we start studying tissues after completing the general embryology. We work on our 4 basic tissues including epithelial, connective and supporting, muscle and nerve tissues. After this introduction in the first semester, when the second semester begins, we are now looking at systems histology and embryology. After seeing how that system develops at the beginning of each process, we have a deep understanding of the structures and details of the organs that constitute those systems. There are advanced laboratories in our faculties. We utilise 2 laboratories as the Department of Histology and Embryology. These are fully equipped. We have archive cabinets and archive sets. We carry out one-to-one practical application of every subject we cover through preparations. If our graduates are willing to go on to further study, they can proceed to postgraduate programmes such as a Master’s degree or a PhD in Histology and Embryology. Upon completion of this programme, our students can easily find jobs in stem cell and biotechnology laboratories, and in vitro fertilization centres if they hold a master's degree in reproductive techniques. Our students can also take the Medical Specialty Examination (TUS) and forge their careers in academia by preferring histology and embryology as a study field. Speaking of our own field, our students have a little difficulty in embryology. Actually, embryology is very enjoyable, very easy and understandable, and we support them in their studies by enriching our presentations, particularly with videos and abundant visuals.
