Department of Nutrition and Dietetics
Hello, I am Assistant Professor Sevan Çetin Özbek, I work as the head of department and lecturer at Yuksek Ihtisas University in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences. Our department started its activities in the 2016-2017 academic year and is a 4-year undergraduate education department. We train healthcare professionals who will hold the title of Dietician at the end of their studies. In our department, Anatomy, Physiology, Basic Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Nutrition Principles, Food Chemistry and Analysis, Vocational Orientation and Ethics, Basic Biochemistry and Nutritional Biochemistry are taught as basic courses in years 1 and 2, while field courses such as Mother and Child Nutrition, Medical Nutrition Therapy in Child Diseases, Medical Nutrition Therapy in Adult Diseases, Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, Determination of Nutrition Status in the Community and Collective Nutrition Systems are given in years 3 and throughout the programme. There are 3 laboratories in our department. The first of these is the Anthropometry Laboratory, where equipment and devices are located to determine body composition and nutritional status. The other one is the Nutrition Principles Laboratory, which aims to teach the changes in macro and micronutrients during the preparation, cooking and serving of foods, and the third one is the Food Chemistry Laboratory for the analysis of the physically basic structure of foods. Our programme’s final year includes internship applications. The process of internship practices consists of an elective internship aimed at the field that the student is interested in. There are applications focusing on adult nutrition, practices for child nutrition, practices for community nutrition, and practices for mass nutrition systems. In this context, public health centres such as state, and training and research hospitals, all kinds of institutions and organizations that provide mass nutrition, community health centres serve as internship practice places. In addition to the Farabi and Mevlana Programme, the Erasmus Programme also continues its studies at our university. Following a 4 year- undergraduate education programme, many of our graduates find employment in hospitals as clinical diagnostics. Our graduates, as a clinical dietician, can prefer the professions such as pediatric dietician, clinical nutrition dietician, bariatric surgery dietician, cardiology dietician, oncology dietician and renal dietician. Our other work areas are community health centres, sports clubs, fitness clubs, newspapers and magazines, educational institutions, educational dietician or sports dietician in community health centres.Since our profession is human health oriented, my advice to friends who will perform this profession is that they should love people and to help people. I recommend that they should respect ethical principles and values and work hard in today's world where nutrition has been of great importance. Our university is located in Ankara, which above all else, is a student city. Our university, which aims to meet the society by blending scientific knowledge and technology with its expert healthcare staff, and which has a scientific perspective and teaches critical thinking, is a common-sense institution. I welcome friends in advance who will prefer our university and department and wish them a good university life.
