Faculty of Medicine

Hello, I'm Professor Doctor Zühal Aktuna. I am the Vice Rector of the Yuksek Ihtisas University, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and also a faculty member of the Medical Pharmacology Department. Our Faculty of Medicine was established in the capital city of Turkey, to reflect the traditions of Yuksek Ihtisas University to medical education. It accepted its first students in 2015. The number of students per faculty member is above the gold standard, and our students have the opportunity to receive one-on-one vocational training from the faculty members. As you know, medical education lasts for 6 years in our country. The first 3 years of this, which are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd semesters, consist of a process where mostly fundamental medical courses are taken along with theoretical courses. We carry out our trainings in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd terms in Balgat Campus. Here, our training model is a model that includes problem-based elements spread into an integrated system. During this period, we give our students fundamental medicine courses as well as extra-field courses and we try to familiarize them with different disciplines thanks to these non-departmental elective courses. In the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, our students strengthen their research skills by taking elective courses for research in addition to evidence-based medicine courses. Our aim is to also train scientists in this department. While training good physicians and healers, one of our main goals is to train individuals who will make a contribution to science. After the fundamental education we give in the first 3 years, our students in the 4th, 5th and 6th years continue with their clinical internship at the contracted hospitals we are cooperating with. During this period, they have the opportunity to do their professional practice one-to-one with the faculty members. The language of instruction at our university is Turkish. We also plan to become a Faculty of Medicine which gives instruction in English by opening the Faculty of Medicine whose language of instruction is English after the 2020-2021 academic year. We have provided Turkish support for our foreign students, starting from the first year, by adding additional lessons to improve their Turkish and to enable them to follow their lessons better. In the following term, we plan to continue our support to our students from abroad with Turkish lesson. As you know, graduates of the Faculty of Medicine are able to become physicians and can work across Turkey as practicing physicians and general practitioners. In addition, they can also take the Specialisation in Medicine Exam (TUS) in order to be eligible to receive training in a specialized area for 4 or 5 years. At times it can even last longer. While doing their internships in their 4th and 5th years students can decide on their area of specialization according to their level of interest and make their selections in the Specialisation in Medicine Exam (TUS) accordingly. I think the most important part of this process is to be able to decide whether they really want to do this or not. We have observed that individuals, who are really enthusiastic, can achieve success both in the training period and in the post-graduation specialty training or in their subsequent medical practices. We want to have the graduates of this university to become scientists who can take a leading role in research and innovation in the field of health. This is something our country is in need of.
