Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anatomy

I am Professor Doctor Rabet Gözil. After retiring from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2015, I transferred to the Faculty of Medicine of Yuksek Ihtisas University. Here I founded the Department of Anatomy. I have also served as the rector and the dean in our university. While establishing the Department of Anatomy, we decided on forming the anatomy education in three parts. The first of these is theoretical lessons, which are given in the classrooms or online with distance education. as we are currently doing. There are also practical lessons. We carry out our practical lessons with models and cadavers. The models are very comprehensive and related to every subject. Our students examine the human body with many models including the ones for the head, neck, back, chest, abdomen, lower and upper extremities of the human body. We also have models that match the organs exactly, with which our students have their lessons. In addition, we also have our students do cadaver dissections. Performing a cadaver dissection is a really difficult and extremely important training. During the course of this training, our students receive a serious education in the presence of academicians and research assistants. While our students are doing cadaver dissection studies, they will also be considered to have carried out their first studies of surgery. Once they have completed their education and dissection, students examine the incisions they have made and learn every part of the human body. In the Department of Anatomy, we participate in many events and studies in order to develop ourselves and our research assistants in the same meticulous way that we wish to train our students. While taking part these studies, we carry out research ourselves. Then, we use that research to prepare papers, posters or oral presentations and attend other events to show our findings.Students who wish to specialize in the Department of Anatomy are educated in two ways. First of all, we grant students not belonging to the Faculty of Medicine the right to do their Master’s degree in our department. These include students who have completed their Bachelor’s in the departments of Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Dietetics and Nursing. Our students do a Ph.D. after completing their Master's degree. After that, they can work as faculty members. As a second alternative, students who are graduates of the Faculty of Medicine, take the TUS (Medical Specialization Exam) and get residency training in the Department of Anatomy. After the completion of their residency training, they can work as faculty members. Since anatomy is an extremely important subject to study, it is very important to specialize in it. The reason for this is the fact that the number of anatomy specialist is quite low in Turkey at the moment. Hence, the training of an anatomist is a very important and difficult process. Our students begin to have their anatomy lessons in the second half of their first year and in their second year. Anatomy education is very difficult since it takes place in Latin. At first, students panic. They constantly ask questions to us about whether they will be able to be successful or not and how we learned ourselves as teachers. Our main advice to students is for them to read a lot and often. Anatomy is a visual lesson, and as a consequence it is of utmost of importance for you to have your atlases, books, pictures and slides with you and use them in your studies. Also, since the terminology is in Latin, it is very difficult for the student to understand, interpret and of course memorize them without knowing their Turkish meaning. Students who have studied visually, who have grasped the meanings of the dictionary terms, and who have also received practical training in the laboratory are able to complete their anatomy education successfully. The students of Yuksek Ihtisas University are educated by highly experienced and successful faculty members and lecturers.The laboratory layout of Yuksek Ihtisas University is in the form of a multidisciplinary laboratory, where all kinds of experiments and studies are presented to the students in a very comprehensible way. All our laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art tools, equipment, and numerous relevant materials which are perfectly sufficient. I can also say the same for the anatomy laboratory along with the physiology, biochemistry and histology laboratories. Our students can access all the materials one by one, examine all the materials they wish and can carry out all the experiments they would like to try out. Offering an education of high calibre is highly advantageous for our current students and of course is a great asset when it comes to Yuksek Ihtisas University being chosen by new students. In addition to these, our campus being located centrally in the very heart of Ankara, that is being a city university, gives us a great advantage. Dormitory and accommodation facilities are provided in the immediate vicinity of the university for students coming from outside the city. Students can get their university education in a really nice environment. In addition to all of these, our hospitals are well equipped and structurally sound. Our clinician lecturers working in the hospitals allocate the necessary time to our students and provide them with a wonderful training. For this reason, Yuksek Ihtisas University is one of the best universities that can be recommended to candidates who are thinking about studying in the Faculty of Medicine. Yuksek Ihtisas University has continued to improve since the day it was established and has taken its place as the top university and has become one of the most preferred universities.
