Faculty of Medicine

Hello, I am Esra Esma Hakikatoğlu. I am a 4th year student at the Faculty of Medicine and an intern doctor. I am studying at Yuksek Ihtisas University. Education at the Faculty of Medicine is a long marathon that lasts 6 years. In the first 3 years, we take courses such as Medical Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, which we call basic sciences, in the university environment. The next 3 years include the period when we take our first step on the ladder into practice. We carry out this process in hospitals. We have a communication that progresses in a master-apprentice relationship with all of our professors. In the first 3 years, we have Microbiology, Pathology and Anatomy laboratories in basic sciences. Our Anatomy Laboratory in particular carries out educational activities on 2 cadavers in our university. We have a very intense academic schedule with focused practical sessions throughout the semester. While this kind of education remains at a basic level in other medical faculties, there are opportunities to highlight our researcher identity in Yuksek Ihtisas University. In the last 3 years I mentioned at the beginning, we have actually practical training, particularly in years 4 and 5. This period is presented as the period which focuses on observation and in which we develop ourselves with the highest opportunity to see patients. The 6th year is actually the period in which the basic sciences and practical knowledge we receive are accomplished. In the 6th year, we actually go through a set of educational activities completely away from the exam oriented practices, where the master-apprentice relationship is felt and sustained the strongest. During the period right after we graduate, we can tend towards different directions in various areas. In this process, you can take the Medical Specialization Examination (TUS) or, if you have discovered the researcher in you, you can further your studies through a Master’s or PhD. Our university and our profession also provide opportunities abroad. At the end of a 6-year process, where we have chosen our area of specialisation, it is also possible to find our place in this profession with the guidance of both our professors and university.The Faculty of Medicine is one of the fields with vast possibilities of employment in Turkey, but in fact, I was trying to train myself to socially help people. After all, we have been through a 6-year long education process. This is an education that is not limited to just 6 years. I am here both to help people socially and sustain their lives; I also preferred this profession to spiritually satisfy myself. When it comes to the reason why I prefer Yuksek Ihtisas University, I came to this university through undergraduate transfer. I chose this university to seize the opportunities offered regarding the qualified academic staff and the city where it is located, and I do not regret it. I do have courage of convictions and stick to my decision. We both experience the master-apprentice relationship extremely efficiently and also receive the best education from the expert teachers. As I mentioned at the beginning, medicine education is actually a very tiring and long marathon. During this time, while furthering my studies and reaching people as a doctor, I had to improve myself. I grasped every opportunity to benefit immensely from both social and cultural activities, particularly thanks to the city where our university is located. Besides this, I continued to follow my lessons meticulously. Thanks to the social clubs our university has and the communication we established with our professors, I took the chance to improve myself, finding myself in a hub of activity. My post-graduation goals are actually not fully formed at the moment. We started to pursue the opportunities abroad during this period. The stress of the Medical Specialty Examination (TUS), has recently begun to make itself felt. I am thinking of furthering my studies either as a researcher or clinician. This is a process of vagueness that has no certainty as after all, we are all young and our ideas and interests may change in time. It is a consideration process that will take an exact shape after I get my diploma. Why should we prefer Yuksek Ihtisas University? In fact, the area, which we call campus, is not just a city. It is a complete composition of interrelated factors varying from communication with the professors to the activities we participate in, which raises and nurtures us and which takes us one step further from our classmates. When I came here, I got the chance to utilise these opportunities to the fullest. Staying constantly in touch with my professors, friends and the staff who are open to development and communication, I carry on my studies in the hospital environment. In fact, you can enjoy the great privilege of both being in Ankara and studying at Yuksek Ihtisas University. We will all be happy to see you here.
