Tourism Management
Hello everyone. I'm Başak Özyurt. I have been working as a research assistant at Trakya University, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Tourism Management since 2018. Our department provides education within the Faculty of Applied Sciences of Trakya University. Our faculty was established as a college in 2005 and was transformed into a faculty in 2019. Our department has providing 4-year undergraduate education activities since 2006. We also offer master's and doctoral programs. In this department, we aim to train up-to-date, world-class executive candidates who can manage their institutions in accordance with the conditions of the countries in order to meet the increasing need for qualified personnel in the sector. Faculty of Applied Sciences, Department of Tourism Management is located in Ayşekadın Campus. As you know, service and human quality is the focal point in the tourism sector. For this reason, tourism sector employees need to have effective communication skills as well as technical knowledge and skills. In this context, our training program includes courses such as Economy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Management, which include basic management knowledge, as well as many field courses such as tourism economy, tourism policy, sustainable tourism, food and beverage management, front office management, housekeeping management, and travel agency. English and German courses are offered in our department. Due to Edirne's proximity to the Balkan countries, Bulgarian and Greek languages will also be offered in the future. In our department, where there are many elective courses offered, we have a rich course pool that you can choose from according to your career plans. Our department has a language lab, a computer lab, a front office and housekeeping practice area, and a food and beverage practice lab. The OPERA v5 program, one of the most used hotel automation programs, is available on every computer in the computer laboratory. Our students’ internship period is for 75 working days. You can complete your internship during the period from the end of the fourth semester until you graduate. You can perform your internship at 3-star accommodation establishments with tourism operation certificate, first class holiday villages, hotels with special certificates from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, food and beverage establishments, A group travel agencies, blue flag marinas, yacht operators, airlines and Trakya University. You can also complete your internship in Erasmus and Mevlana exchange programs, which offer you many opportunities abroad. As the Department of Tourism Management, we encourage our students to participate in these programs every semester. The education period in the Erasmus Program can last between 3 and 12 months. Internships can last from 2 to 12 months. Within the Erasmus Program, a grant will be awarded for which half of the expenses will be covered. If you want to benefit from the Mevlana exchange program, you can participate in this program within a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2 semesters. Our department hosted the International Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Protection in 2018. This conference, which was as a part of an international project, was held in cooperation with our partners in Bulgaria. At this conference, various papers related to the Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Protection were presented by universities and non-governmental organizations. After graduating from this department, you can continue your career in many other fields, especially in the tourism and accommodation sector. You can work at operational and management levels in many other areas of the service sector, especially in accommodation businesses, food and beverage businesses, airline businesses and entertainment businesses. If you get the required score in the Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS), you can apply to public institutions hiring a tourism management graduate. You can also apply for master's and doctoral programs in tourism management and business administration. Some of the characteristics sought for the students who will study in the tourism management department are to be disciplined, responsible, positive and energetic. Also, foreign language skills play a very important role. Knowing two foreign languages will put you in a very advantageous position in the sector. The socio-cultural structure of student-friendly Edirne is a very suitable environment for you to spend your time in. Trakya University does not just provide academic education.
